Let Them Flash!

Snorvich- yeah i decided to go with the flashers. I might add 1 or 2 more small ones and thats it. yes they are very high energy fish and very entertaining. I feed them live brine shrimp along with every other fish i have. They absolutely love live stuff. I think i'm starting to really enjoy flashers and fairys.

Heres some new but blurry shots of them flashing:

Linespot flasher:

Thanks for the help :D

fishes2889,

It is a nice idea to make a F&F realm, Steve. You can enjoy them so much if properly cared. They need a tank cover, many hiding places and also an open space to swim freely. They will take a tablet and catch foods from your hand directly.

H. Tanaka,

I am enjoying them sooooo much!!! :D I cant't wait to add 1 or 2 more!!

I have the tank covered completely. I have lost fish in the past where i was stupid enough to not put a cover on my old tanks.

And are the final id's on my flashers definitly a McCoskers and a Linespot??

Thanks
Steve :D

fishes2889 -- In addition to brine (which you should load with selcon), try frozen mysis (also soaked in selcon), Don't feel bad about your photography, those little buggers bounce around like puppies on drugs. Enjoy

wrasseguy2 -- yes it is a male carpenters (2 filaments, red anal fin)

here is one more pic of my carpenters

In the initial picture from wrasseguy2
I saw TWO filaments which makes it a Carpenters. In this picture, there is only one making it a McCoskers. My vision must be going south for the winter.

Your local fish store probably has it but if not you can get it from Dr. Foster and Smith (they also sell it on ebay) or Marine Depot. The problem is that brine, even recently hatched, is nutritionally deficient. Fish love it but it is like eating a constant diet of licorice (I would if allowed). Selcon has all sorts of immune system builders and vitamins. Costs about $6 per bottle retail.

Garlic is also a good soak for mysis and flake food. Many say it has disease fighting properties; I am less sure about that but it REALLY improves the appetite of fish. This is liquid garlic, again found at the two above sources or possibly your LFS. Personally, I prefer the less concentrated form sold by Seachem. Often it too is available on Ebay.

Flashers also tend to like and benefit from Cyclopeeze which your LFS probably sells but is also available from other sources. Give as much variety as possible because the contents of each provides value. Remember that flashers are high energy fish and should be fed small amounts multiple times per day. In my case, I feed three times but if you only can do two, that is better than one.

I feed 3 times right after school with brine usually around 3 then 6 and then 9 oclock. I havent seen any particular additives at my store( that i work at). We dont carry Cyclopeeze but i told my boss to order some due to high demand for it. I will check into food additives.

Thanks,
Steve

Do any of you think your flasher's are hyperactive? My McCosker's just flashes constantly. Not sure if he does it while I'm at work, but while I'm home, and especially when being fed, he's flashing more often than not. To the point that it's not relaxing or neat to watch anymore, I'm kind of concerned. It's even causing some fin damage. Here's a pic I took tonight while he was, of course, flashing all around the tank. He tore the fin on the corner of one of the closed loop flared nozzle outlets:

H. Tanak or if anyone else knows..i am thinking about trying to my lfs to score me a p angulatus..i was wanting to know if they are often avaliable..i have seen it once in person but have not agian...and that store told me they were kinda rare to find..thanks

wrasseguy2,

P. angulatus seems to be common somewhere in southern Philippines but it seems rarer in the northern part of the islands. No record from Taiwan but some are reported from n. Indonesia.

The number of individials in total depends on shippers, locality of capture or even climate; some deal in the species on occasion but some others never. I could not find it in any place for these six months.

ok thanks for the info...my friend told me that he can get one on friday so i will kepp my fingers crossed....i can't wait i really like those guys alot

wrasseguy2 where in Mi do you live?? I just picked up one of the flashers you wanted locally for really cheap & they did have another. This lfs gets them as red parrots. They had about four different species in the same tank.
