I have never really liked hex tanks until recently. Upon a recent trip to my LFS i saw a 42 gallon hex which I think would be great. I would like to build a "rock colum" all the way up in the center and have one MH maybe 250w.

I would love see yours, or anyones hex tanks and hear about the system that is set up on these unusual tanks.

I have a 65g hex....here's a pic...my biggest complaint is there is no room in the stand for a sump and gear....I had a custom acrylic sump built to fit the stand...previous to that I had a crappy little sump that liked to overflow....I have a Remora Pro skimmer (now hidden in the stand), Coralife Aqualight Pro with a 150w (they put out the model with the 250w a couple months later!) you'll have to excuse the tubing you see but I can't seem to fit the phosban reactor into the stand so it can be hidden, I have a rock wall going up the back with about 80lbs of LR...it is viewable on all but 1 panel as that is where the overflow is, 2 Maxijet 1200 for flow but it is a bit of a strange tank to work the flow on, it is mostly softies and the odd LPS, my livestock is probably pushing the limits but here it is

Fish - 1 Kole tang, pair of Mandarin Dragonettes, 1 Yellow Watchman Goby, 1 Bi-color Blenny, 3 chromis, 2 Firefish, 1 Yellow Clown Goby, pair of False Perculas (had a pair of Maroons in there but not enough room for them)
Inverts - 1 Emerald crab, 2 Skunk Cleaner shrimp, 1 Coral Banded Shrimp, lots of hermits and snails, 1 Cucumber, 1 Blue Tuxedo Urchin,

Corals - Colt, Zoa's, mushrooms, Ricordea, yellow star polyps, Kenya trees, Corky fingers, Frogspawn, Hammer, Orange Fungia, Button Polyps, Candycanes, and a bunch I am missing I am sure.......here's a pic!

With the stand, that is one of my areas of concern. I am a huge fan of BIG sumps.....because a BIG sump = a BIG refugium.

You do look like you are pushing the fish livestock envelope....if not are WAY over it.....but it looks like what ever you are doing is working.

As far as having too much livestock in there, I say if it working, go for it, and it looks like you either know what you are doing, or are very lucky. Either way, it is a SWEET tank.

A warning....don't put in too much rock, because as the corals grow, you quickly run out of room, making even glass cleaning difficult. hth

I like big sumps too...but you deal with what you have...I ended up with only about 13 gallons for sump volume but it worked ok for me. The tank has been set up for 2 years now and my levels are always very low if not 0. I have a ton of the rock in my sump as you really do have to watch (as SD guy) says how much rock when you have that many panels to see and plan around for corals.

Wow, that one tank needs a lot of scrubbing. I don't know if it's possible with acrylic though. With that said, I've heard of products that easily remove coraline algae from acrylic without scratches. I will look it up, in case you haven't.

Here's a couple of pics of my 30 hex. It ran for about 18 months until I bought my new house in May. I liked the aquascaping I came up with, but it's hard to figure out at times....there aren't alot of choice when aquascaping a hex. Your idea sounds cool, I thought of the same thing when I did mine, but I couldn't come up with a practical way to do it. The other problem was hiding wires and stuff. It was hard to figure out how to get my backdrop on in a way that looked decent. Cleaning the glass was hard too. When you get armpit deep in a tank to clean the glass you are bound to spill some water and make a mess, lol.
