Lets see your DIY Calcium Reactors!!

Looking into a diy reactor and want to get peoples opinions on their DIY projects including costs and links if possible.

Thanks,
Josh

6"x ~20" upflow with Mag 3.

Cracked the one above so been using this for now close to 6 months (note no recir pump). Easily keeps up the Ca and Alk in my 145g mainly SPS tank.

How are you not using a recirculating pump? Do you use some sort of perastalic pump?

Still feeding the reactor off my return pump (as I did with the first reactor just that there's no recir pump. My Ca and Alk still on target and CO2 usage about the same.

Here is mine, it started as a DJ88 design, but it is now a DJ88/GEO Hybrid:

WHen it is full, it holds 50 pounds of media. It is a dual chamber square reactor, and measures 10x10x20 tall. I use about 10lbs of CO2 a year, and the effluent measures about 32-35 coming from the reactor at a pH of 6.5. It is the large GenX media in there... I have been running it for almost 3 years, and still have 30+ of media in there!

What did you use to seal the cap on top or is it just the two pieces of acrylic against each other?

IMO you NEED a recirc pump. I am having difficulty figuring out how one will work without it.

The way this one works, It does not NEED a feed pump.
The recirc pump provides enough differential pressure to draw water in & dump back to the sump by itself.

I have since changed this one to use ALL rigid 1/2 PVC instead of the vinyl tubing.

I used 2 pieces of "fun foam" that you can buy at JoAnn fabric, or Michael's craft store. (I used 2 to make it thicker...)

What thickness acrylic is everyone using for their square reactors? I want to build a DJ88 reactor, but I was just quoted $350 for a sheet of 3/8" from a local plastic supplier...

Not saying don't use a recir pump, but I've been running my chamber without one since the beginning of last October. It's 4x36" half full of fine ARM media and my bubble count and effluent rate is the same as my original (6x20" recir, 2/3 full of media). Effluent pH I keep around 6.7.

Reason believe it works is it a long length small diameter tube. Water and CO2 is fed into the chamber at the bottom, effluent comes off the side near the top.

Very good thread josh i was going to start this thread also! haha

Now i dont see a bubble counter or ph probes, Is it possible to have these on the DIY or am i just missing it in the picture?! how are you regulating the efluent coming out and co2 going in?
