Lets see your Ora Red Planet

I thought mine encrusted quickly, but compared to SDguy's, not really. Mine covered most of the epoxy and a bit of the rockwork next to the plug before one of the branches started to grow. Now that that branch has grown, the encrusting has slowed a bit. It didn't show up well in the photo above, but the growing branch has a light color to it, the rest of the coral has kept its green base/red polyp look.
This is just a guess as I am new to SPS's, but the shot of SDGuy's crazy-encrusting RPT shows some pretty crowded real estate, at least compared to my tank...it makes me wonder if the coral encrusts more to claim more territory, maximizing initial spread at the cost of vertical growth, if there are a lot of other corals in close proximity. Others in this thread mentioned it is a pretty dominant coral in turf battles...Just a theory.

This is how mine looked as a frag. It didn't encrust too much, it just took off upwards.

Not an ORA piece, but very similar... this pink table I've had for years and I have to chop it back every few months...

... the newest shelf...

I wish I had more room to give it... it fills it this entire gap on the left side quickly...

The coral that closes from the other side grows much slower... and much thicker... this is an Acropora tutielensis I also got years ago... I call him "King Tut"... You could see both corals fight for every ray of light and use it... :)

John, the red table is pretty impressive but that's one FANTASTIC tut! Always loved that coral but never seen one grown out like that in a personal aquarium. Great job!!! Did it start as a frag or colony?

Thanks bud... I got this piece as a small wild colony... the pictures I just posted are a bit dated but still you could see how this colony has encrusted itself competely to the foundation rock of this system... luckily I put it in the right spot to start... after being in this hobby for so many years I get more excited over growth form than color... :spin3:

I hear ya... not too many corals that grow and fuse in that shape at all. Love it and totally jealous! I'll have to pick one up one of these days...

WOW,do u have a FTS?Those colonies are huge.

Yea, I had a red planet that did that too, but i mounted it on a little hill and when it couldn't encrust it started branching. Yours looks like it's on fairly flat surface.

Gary,

Like most of our corals, our original red planet fragments came from a hobbyist in Germany.

Here are a few pictures over the years showing the growth of one of our pets. Pardon the quality. . .
