Lets see your Ora Red Planet

Sorry for the bump but you all seem to be the red planet experts. What should I do with this beast of a frag? Leave it on the plug and let it encrusted a rock or pull it off and glue it to a rock? It looks like it's about to take off any time now but I have it sitting half way up the tank on a rock right now under 250w 14k Phoenix.

I don't know whether my one is Ora Red Planet or not.
Please ID it for me.

2009-5-1 I got it from LFS.

The more i look at your colony the more familiar that growth pattern looks.I have a few different colonies that do that in my DT and i noticed they are getting hammered with flow constantly in stead of the more favourable random bursts that my other colonies are getting. Also in most cases the colony is pretty close to other corals and in some touching at the base and fighting for space.I dont know if this applies to you but if your RP is getting hammered with constant flow this may be the issue

Dan, the RP isn't really getting hammered in its location. After recently losing my other red table acro to RTN, I think I may snap one of the two tiny branches off the RP and place it where the red table was, to see if it grows any differently.

Red Planet and Red Planet imposter

Red Planet and Red Planet imposter

After months of tinkering, I've finally got a shot for comparison.

The Red Planet is on the left and the "imposter" is on the right. Both were much more green on the top of my frag rack just under 400W 20K ice cap bulbs, but the red is coming out much more so on the RP.

Behind was an "unknown" frag on the rack and it has taken on a similar color scheme.

Cheers,

Reed

And the two little nubs I cut off:

I just recieved a frag of Red Planet. How much light does it need? I have 400 watt 14k Uhios, so if it needs a lot of light I have got it, but I would like to place it a little deeper if I could.

I would put it at the lower part of the tank, I put mine too high and it's lost a lot of it's green althouge it is growing like mad I miss the green.

place it the lowerst u can do if u wan it to stay more green as the original's.

I was worried about mine "reding" out too much. I have a red milli that is already red enough. How much flow do u have urs under to grow so fast?

Mine is under 250w 14K's, and is red on top and green and almost purple at the base. It's grown since I post to this thread about a year ago.

This is mine and it is about a years worth of growth from a small ORA frag plug with a few branches on it. I only have 150w halides 14K phoenix over it, midway down in the tank, and it gets alot of flow. It has a little green left on the base, but I think I could get more green if I put it on the bottom. This coral doesn't want alot of light or you will get a light pink or all red milli.

Would love to see some more growth pics, I just got a small 1/2'' frag so I dont have any pics to show yet but mine is all green with a very small red/pink tip. Its about 10" directly under 150w MH with 14K bulb and gets moderate intermitten flow. PE isn't great yet. I havent glue it in yet as im not sure where to place it I have read they can be major encrusters and I have a mostly zoe tank so I didnt want it growing over my zoes. perhaps I will dedicate a rock to just it.
