Thanks for the post! Good stuff. What potential issues are there with sulfate reduction, SO4? Or is it H2S? As SO4 is one of the major moelcules in NSW, no issues? Are all methanobacterium sulfate reducers or are they able to utilize NO3?

Sulfate reduction would have a minimal effect unless you build H2S up in the sand and then let the bubble burst all at once (you see this in DSBs). There are 1000s of bacterial specimens in our reef circulating at any given moment. To point to just one and say this is it will not be an easy task but may be a great way to get some insight into what exactly we are doing when dosing.

NO3 can be utilized by many denitrifying bacterium and reduced to N2. To my knowledge most, if not all, of these are anaerobes. There are numerous ones isolated from salt-water that have been shown to reduce CH3CH2OH and CH2OH. Can these also utilize sugar? I don't know but most are grown in the presence of simple alcohols and not sugars. The bacterial strains may not be the same. This is mostlikely the main difference between sugar dosing and ethanol dosing. Personally, I'm waiting to hear someone claiming mixing sugar with ethanol methods are better than the two individually.

there have been many discussions on mixed c-source dosing.

we do it just to be safe. ime, sugar seems to cause more "scum" build up. very scientific i know, but that's the best way i can describe it :)

I have been dosing sugar for three days now and I am seeing some color improvement on my acroporas. I am just wondering if you guys think I should be dosing vodka instead.
Thanks!

3 days is too soon to see anything, the bacteria is just barely starting at that stage.
Any improvement in color is wishful thinking or has little to nothing at all to do with sugar dosing for 3 days.
give it a few weeks atleast to see some effects of dosing.
good luck
Erik

Hey Genetics,

What kind of fish is in your avatar?

Thanks,

James

Psuedochellinus mysterii
It's a five bar mystery wrasse. Beautiful fish with great personality! Mine has seven bars but I don't hate him for it.:D

Ok, well I started Vodka dosing about 3 weeks ago and the last few days I have added double what I normally add.

This morning I noticed that white slime everyone is talking about on my rocks and sump. I didnt notice any negative effect on the sps just that the tank did look slightly cloudier.

Should I now cut back to my regular 2.5 ml/day? Should I feed more? I dont have any of the zeo additives. Let me know what anyone recommends. Thanks.

I slowly moved up from 2ml per day up to 10 ml per day, I've been at the 10 mark now for 2-3 weeks. Not sure if I should go any hirer then that
Erik

Just thought i'd give a brief update:

We are now back in full force using our own mixed C-Source and prodibio. Valonia is wilting away and corals are booming in growth

More importantly, what are your PO4 and NO3 (good test kits please)? The slight cloudiness is a bacteria bloom. Using ethanol/sugar/zeo whatever, you need to go by nutrients and not by what you think your animals look....

Agreed. You don't need that much ethanol/sugar to do this properly and there are many adverse effects by dosing too much. Stick to 2.5ml/day and measure you nitrate/phosphate levels. They'll go down even with that amount and if they reach undetectable you may want to cut back on addition or feed heavier.

I am at 3.5 ml and notice a slight lowering in nitrates- do I continue to increase the dose- or stay here. The skimmer is foaming like crazy.
