Let's talk Blue Throat Trigger Fish

He actually has a small purple pseudochromis and pair of clownfish as tank mates. They all get along so far. They swim near each other, and show absolutely zero signs of aggression. I'll keep a very close eye on everyone though.

Gildorph, sounds like you've got some great triggers there. I've heard about the larger triggers (and fish in general) having a harder time getting used to aquaria life.

The blue throat I bought is about 3 inches or so. Still hides in the rocks when I get near the tank. Seems very comfortable in the tank when I'm in the room (and sitting down for a bit).. but move toward the tank and he hides. Poor guy.

I do love their personality and behavior for the most part. I have found providing areas where they can feel locked in to the rocks makes them comfortable.

I've got 1 in my 210 reef along with a Niger and a PinkTail. 3 awesome fish who live with all my other Tangs and assorteds in the community, with no problems whatsoever.

I've had mine in the my 90 Gallon for almost a month now. He is small, about 3".

He is currently with a Powder Blue, Yellow Tang, Pair of Adolescent Clowns, Sixline Wrasse, and Yellow Watchman Goby.

He sticks to the rocks more or less. I was expecting that while he was in the 90 Gallon though, since the Powder Blue and Yellow Tang were in there first.

I should have everything moved over to my 180 Gallon this weekend.

They are awesome fish. Mine eats everything from flakes and pellets, to meaty foods like clam/shrimp/scallop.

Been three years since last post. May be in market for a pair of 3" blue throat triggers. I was never interested in the female alone but what about as a pair. Are there advantages to having a pair?

I didn't have luck with a redtail and blue throat in a 180g as they fought constantly. 2 blue throats (1 male and 1 female) will be fine.

Can you even sex them at a young age?
yes, only the male has the blue throat.

I got the pair today, just finished acclimating. My PBT, slightly smaller than the BT's immediately started to harrass them but in the process, the PBT got scratched up (not from the BT fighting back but just from the friction). The harrassment stopped as soon as I fed the tank. Been less than an hour and the male BT is already out swiming in the open. The PBT is still a bit ****ed off but the BT is standing his ground. The female is still hiding. Will keep ya updated. Im glad with my puchase, they are pretty much my show specimens. Price was great, 50 for male, 40for female or $80 for the pair (minus my 10% discount for being a local reef club member.

Quick update, female came out.. This is a good sign.

Post pics!!

My bluethroat took almost 2 weeks before it would eat. Now, it eats anything I feed it, even flakes!! It's the easiest predator I've taken care of.

Here is a pic of the male and female swimming together in the open less than one hour of placement.

After one hour the PBT (Powder Blue Tang) is swimming peacefully with the Blue Throats.

We have a 7" blue throat in our 220 reef, and he's awesome. His tank mates are a 7" queen angel, a 6" red sea sail fin, an 11" vlaminji tang(we're planning a tank upgrade b/c of him), a few clowns and chromis, and a flame hawk. The BT, Sharky, is very well behaved, and very personable. He's out in the open constantly, and eats anything, even seaweed. His favorite activity is circling one of the mp40s. Constantly.

Big behavior change for my BT's. Its been two days now and they are much less shy. Male is also aggressively feeding where before the two would just take it if it happened to float by. Females feeding is also better but not as much as male. She was always more shy than he was, even in the store. On two occassions now I have seen the male spit out his food several minutes after eating. Is this a normal Trigger behavior?
