Let's talk Blue Throat Trigger Fish

Are you asking about the spitting? Yes, that's normal. My male bluethroat is an aggressive but very messy eater. He will chomp on a silverside, krill or shrimp, spit those up shredded, then pick one or two pieces to gulp down. It still amazes me that these particular triggers are classified as "planktonic" feeders, yet eat these big chunks of food.

That is interesting, I would be interested in possibly finding a journal that discusses the BT physiologically and anatomologically. The how and why of this behavior. Thanks for the reply.
 
I vote no on a 4 foot tank also. I had a pair in my 8 foot 344 gallon. I made the mistake of not having a cover. The male jumped and died. The female then got ick and died. No other fish were sick. They are very fast swimmers, always cruising about.
 
Here's to bumping a 1 year old thread, with a new question:

My current tank is 68 x 32 x 22, mixed reef, one long arch and a few smaller columns for scape.

Tank inhabitants are a pair of yellow tangs, 1 blue tang, and about 13 different wrasses. Would adding a blue throat trigger be OK in my tank?
 
I have a pair in my 200 gallon angel reef and absolutely love them. I got them about a year ago when they were both about 3" long, they hang together all day long and show no sign of aggression. My favorite trigger fish species by far.

I can't think of why it wouldn't be.
 
I currently have a pink tail trigger i am about to catch and trade in. I can not add any smaller fish or it kills them. I have a paid of Blue throats on hold. But again this worries me will they typicaly be less agressive than the pink tail?
 
My apologies for reviving this old thread! I have a male Bluethroat Trigger in my mixed 120 and he is a model citizen! I am considering adding a female and am wondering how they will interact-if at all. I am going to add another "peaceful" trigger and am trying to decide whether to go with a "blander" female Bluethroat, of something entirely different, such as a crosshatch or niger.
Should my male react positively to a female and should they bond and hang together? I know every fish has an individual personality and if there is a good chance that adding a female would be appreciated by my male and they will interact well, I am inclined to go this way.

My female crosshatch died and I repaired with my male and they were good to go.. This was years ago.. Now I have a male crosshatch, male bluethroat, and the line spot triggerfish and they all get along great. The repairing is hit or miss..

A quick update....my female has been in for a few weeks now and the pair is getting along fantastically! Got into a bit of a spat on another thread with someone who was insisting that my 120 is inadequate for my pair. I have a lot of rock, they are both 4 inches and my clear understanding is that they will max out at 9". What do you guys think? I've been in this hobby seriously for more than 40 years and from the advice I received and what I have seen so far, no problem.

lol, dude, you are gonna get this thread locked too. :eek:
we are all trying to assist and providing realistic info, nothing personal.
a 90, is too small, for 2 trigs.
and bt can get to 12 inches, easily...

on 8/22 you said you were considering adding a female... on 8/25 you said got the female... today is 9/2, a week later but above you say the female has been in for a few weeks...

It's a 120 and if things went south, or they got too large, of course I would rehouse them. My question was on compatibility.

I just got a blue throat a week ago and he spends almost all his time in the rocks. VERY skittish. Is this normal for them when they are new? Other than the first couple hours I don't think he got bullied by the yellow tang and hippo. I've got a 240 and they are all kind of mid-sized.

I'm starting to get worried. He was QT'd for like 3 was but was eating well. Now I don't know as when he sees me he dives for the rocks and stays there.

My male is very shy as is my sargussum and male crosshatch... They like there areas to hang in.. They eat like pigs!!

A bummer to hear but that is completely normal bt behavior and it often does not improve over time. As much as triggers are my weakness I recommend against adding bt, probably the only trigger I would say "no" to.
Another issue with them is that the males often lose their color.
So many other beautiful triggers to look to.
