Let's talk football...

Since you guys like to discuss football so much, here's your own thread.

Now, I have one comment to make, in relation to the newspaper headline I saw this morning.

What the HECK is up with UT fans being so stinking fair weather??? They BOOED? They all left after the third quarter???

Wow, let's belittle the team into doing well. That's how you motivate people. That is the lamest thing I have ever heard, no matter what the score is...you don't BOO your own team.

I had a first time experience going to a ball game. Executive Suite "box seats" for Titans vs Texans. Now that's the way to go! Free food and beverages. 20 people in the suite with HD flatscreen replays. The only thing that would have been better is if it were cold and drizzeling while I sat in that nice comfy seat enjoying the game.

And Go Titans! Go! I think we have a good team without Young. Collins even made a couple good runs.

That really made me laugh :)

Dunno whats up with the UT fans. Painting Fire Phil on the rock and what not. Man, he's a great coach, teams go through their ups and downs, it is a little sickening to see people bailing on them like this.

As far as the titans, Im super impressed with the way collins is playing, and Im glad they made the decision to leave the team with him as long as he is playing well. I really can't get past how thin young's skin is. If he can't keep the bad thoughts out of his head and have a short memory, he's never going to make it.

My hubby is a big UT fan but I have to say very fare weather :(. He is down on Fulmer and has been for a long time but like I say he drives me crazy being so all for them in the good times and all bad mouthging them in the bad. I think most Ut fans feel its time for a head coach change is why so many of them left.
I would hate to be so in the public eye that people would be so mean as to make signs about how bad of a coach I was. He still has a family and feeling and folks are very mean to him.

People were booing Fulmer last week when he went out to eat at Calhoun's... I think that is unacceptable... I have a few players in my classes... Daniel Lincoln is in my Finance class... I have gone out of my way to let them know I still support them... I'll be sure to talk to them some more this week...

What p!sses me off is that I can not even take my wife to a game because of the so called fans of UT... All they want to do is cuss the other team when we're doing well and cuss our team when we aren't... That is the only reason I haven't gone to a game yet... I'll be there against either Wyoming or Kentucky...

I'm UT through and through... I'll support Fulmer till he is no longer our coach... Not all fans are like the ones portrayed by the media... Go Vols... ;)

TN has been a middle-of-the-pack SEC team for nearly a decade. At present, their recruiting isn't very strong, they are penalty-prone, terrible at in-game corrections, the defense plays too soft in the 2nd half if they're up, and the offense is both stagnant and predictable. All of that indicates bad coaching. Cutliff was a good enough offensive coordinator to make up for Fulmer and Chavis. Now with Clawson, there is nowhere to hide.

Given their history, budget, and fan-base, I don't think it's crazy to expect a bit more. I don't think it should have to go as far as Fulmer getting fired. He needs to recognize that the SEC caught up with him, and then passed him by, and that he should step down at the end of this season to save face and avoid having to be fired. I don't think he is capable of leading a team to a BCS game, not to mention a national championship (and maybe not even an SEC championship - they've been three times and lost all three, unlike GA and FL).

Need an example of what bringing in a good new coach can do? - 'Bama

I still root for the Vols - but something needs to change 'round here.

Bama went through A LOT of coaching changes before it found success with Nick Saban... Alabama did not finish strong at all last year... In fact the win against TN was their last good game of the year...

Fulmer is a good coach, we did make it to the SEC championship last year and came close to winning it...

I agree about the mistakes and penalties, but a lot of that lands on Crompton's shoulders... The coach's responsibilities lie in placing the players in the proper position to make plays... Crompton has had WIDE open receivers running down field and they go unnoticed... Coach Fulmer cannot go out on the field and hand the ball off to Foster... These are Player mistakes...

I also believe the Fans are not helping the recruiting situation... After the Florida debaucle and the BOOing of the fans during that game, Nunes our star quarterback commitment downgraded to a soft verbal...

Who wants to come and play for a team that is going to be booed??? Something to keep in mind...

Nunes is now commited to Stanford.

I agree that the booing and personal attacks on Fulmer are in very bad taste. Unfortunately UT, like most other schools, has a lot of fans that are very negative and that negativity has only grown in the last 6 or 7 years.

Our struggles this year on offense are mainly from quarterback play (the fumble Saturday IMO was Cromptons fault, not Fosters. Foster had his arms wide enought but Crompton didn't look the handoff in). From what I hear Crompton practices well but that doesn't carry over into games. That isn't the coaches fault. You could probably fault them for sticking with him too long though. There have been some coaching faults but the main thing is the quarterback. It's impossible to win with a quarterback that doesn't know how to check out of a simple bad play and turns the ball over regularly.

I've been a Fulmer fan for a long time (I remember what Vols football in the 80's was like ;). Unfortunately the rift between the negative people that have wanted Fulmer to go for the last 6 or 7 years and the others is wider than ever and the fan base in general is not excited about UT football now.

I do feel that it's only going to be a matter of time before there is a coaching change. But be carefull what you wish for. You don't get a Bruce Pearl every time you go out and hire a coach;)

War eagle!

That wasn't such a good game for both of us. Everone had a bad game this time around, even florida and georgia.

We all thought it was going to happen in the SEC someone has to loose every saturday. I am worried about vandy....

I am going to the game, GAME DAY will be in Vandy...Now that is a first

Being a bama fan and Alabama alumn I have to agree with Evil Mel on the not booing for this game. I mean it was a close draw. You guys have a new quarterback and your getting like Alabama, you cannot have a good team ever year, "last year you did go and play the national champions well at the SEC championship game".
That being said, there are a ton of young talent teams in the SEC this year with the next two years looking good for alot of them 'alot of senior/junior QB's and running backs/WR high caliber offense's I see coming about in two years". Your going to have to step it up this year due to Vandy and Kentucky being some of the best in the east thus far or it could be a long year. I am amazed at how conservative the UT Auburn game was, it was a rough game to watch. The seasons only 1/3 over and who knows what could happen, there is alot of football left to be played.

To turn that question on its head: Who wants to play for a team whose performance against the team's #1 rival is abysmal enough to get booed by one of the strongest fan bases in the country?

No offense, but "booing hurts our recruiting" is a lame argument. Yes, booing means different things to different people - but one thing it surely does not mean is apathy - it is a sign that people care (and are upset) by something. Everyone across the nation knows the strength of the Vols fanbase, one of the strongest in the country. Sure, booing isn't the most articulate form of human expression, but what other voice does a mob have? I agree it should be reservedly used, and is increasingly overused and abused in today's world. But it has its place.

Fulmer/Clawson absolutely deserved to get booed at Auburn for their judgment call to not pull Crompton on at least one series in the second half... he was incapable of throwing a catchable football. I don't think he should have seen play time in the second half, based on his first half 'performance.'

Just to set the records straight: Nunes committed to TN thinking he couldn't play for Stanford. When Stanford finally recruited him, he committed there since "“Stanford has always been my dream to attend and for the past three years." Nothing to do with booing.

I thought folks might find the poll results below interesting. Note that there are almost 10k votes(!). I wonder how long it will take the mere ~65,000 fans that show up Saturday to leave if Crompton starts?

I bet our recruiting will be weak this year. But I bet "booing" is a minor factor if it is even relevant. It has a lot more to do with the reasons for which fans are booing.
