Saturday afternoon after 2:30pm 4/14/12.
Informal gathering of friends to talk saltwater.... and whatever else.
Carey Lake
5 miles east of Penfield on 441
If you need to google it, I believe the town is Walworth.
I'll be there cleaning the tank and having a few...

Everyone can chime in about how to better care for an ultra low budget 9foot long lookthrough tank!! No hurt feelings on my part. Promise.

So as to minimize making this seem like an excuse to get together strictly for beers, How about we try to make this somewhat educational as well. I'm not sure exactly what the subject matter might be, other than my describing what process I've taken to change a swamp into a almost respectable softie tank with little or no budget.
Ideas are welcome here folks. Let's hear them!

When bulb replacement time comes around a nice DIY LED setup would really open up some possibilities while long term reducing overhead costs.

I dont know anyone that has a problem with finding an excuse for drinking beers haha I am going to drink one to that right now lol!

Steve, it's a cool idea. Would our underage hobbyists be allowed in the bad. Sure they wouldn't get served alcahol. They still do homemade icecream there?

Underage not an issue. The owner has a couple grade schoolers of his own. They are in and out of the joint all the time. Sometimes even "helping". No more homemade icecream though. It's more of a sports bar now. Kindof eclectic really. Big reef tank, tv's, pool table, victorian but with gangster memorabilia on the walls. A monster buffalo head, restaurant seating, dance floor has been known to ROCK some nights,... outside patio seating overlooking the lake/pond, I have seen lots of folks bring kids fishing poles for catch and release. Follow the Ducks, Geese, frogs, etc around the water can be fun for the kiddies. The place is a trailhead to snowmobile trails, so at this time of year hiking through the woods a bit with the kiddies can be fun. I've even set up a tent on the far side of the pond for a "campout" with my daughter. MONSTER big Victorian party hall with a stage in a separate building behind the resturant. Gazebo overlooking the lake is nice for pics and weddings and who knows what (after dark of course)....

Is this still on?

I was really looking forward to this one. Don't get out to the bars much to socialize. Turns out my family was invited to dinner party. Catch up next time.

this is odd

this is odd

I never heard of Carey Lake before today... but my buddies band "The Fools" just posted on Facebook that they are playing out there tonight.

You got a band over there while you're tipping a few, Steve?

Did I forget to mention the bands? yupper. Friday nite is usually a guitarist with whoever. Saturdays eclectic variety of bands. Rock, country, folk, oldtimers and young. They really haven't figured out what to do yet. It seems to be evolving into who knows what. sometimes empty, sometimes packed. Totallly unpredictable so far. I hear ESL just bought 400 acres across the street, so somethings gonna happen out in 315 land along 441 within the next couple years. talk is a BIG sports complex. maybe waterpark. campgrounds, snowtube hills.... I guess Topps is building a mile down in Walworth too. I guess there's no holding back the urban sprawl. It couldn't just stop at Penfield...

You can only imagine how polluted the tank gets. Beers, cig buts, sweet and low packets... when the crowd is pounding it, the noise can be deafening. good thing I only hear 12% of what everyone else in the world does. The livestock are living inside a drum!! The CO2 skyrockets in the place. then the doors open. Winter, summer it doesn't matter. The snowmobilers oilly stink leave a film on the water. The summer heat last year had the tank up close to 90. I blow a box fan on the sump..... ahhhh the stories to tell..... but no one was there today to share any of them....

I don't know the name of the band, but the female vocalist was a blondie. The lead guitarist had hair to his waist, bass was a younger guy, drums older guy...

I have to mention, lead singer Tom Chamberlain of Sinzibukwud wrote and performs a song (Fishtank) inspired by this tank at each of their appearances....

the guitarist with the long hair... I was in a band with him for many years. We opened for REO Speedwagon, Marshall Tucker and a whole bunch of other national acts. That band you saw yesterday is called "The Fools".

Chick singer does Heart and Janis.

I looked them up on line. That's them. The wife and I had nearly a private showing! 3 couples in booths to the side, a few ladies at a table with a couple kiddies...
The wifeypoo and I stood near the center of the tank- at the focal point of the sound..
I just don't understand. Does no one go out anymore? It's not like the old college days when you didn't get started till midnight. They were making music by a little after 8. Never took a break as long as we were there -after 11:00...
In early June they are going to be 2 miles up the road at Harv's Harley D. I gotta believe they'll draw a better crowd than last night. I know some people are even going to fly their single engine lights in for the day.

people don't go out anymore, Steve!

people don't go out anymore, Steve!

it's not like it used to be.

That's a good band. They'll draw much more at the next gig down the road.
Promotion for this event yesterday wasn't the greatest. I think a lot of advertising is kaput because promoters think online sites like facebook are gonna cover it... but they're wrong. JMO.

I can tell people aren't out like they used to be. I grew up around here.
Despite what we hear and see on the news, I think things around here are still "tight" (economy wise).
I'm not saying this event was costly but... people just don't get around like they used to. Again.. JMO.

As a "going out" kind of guy...no, people don't go out that much anymore. Smokers can't smoke, DWI laws are thankfully very strict and people simply don't have the money to play anymore. In my small area cruddy bands used to draw a decent crowd. Good bands had out small venues so cramped it wasn't usually comfortable to hang out for too long. Now cruddy bands get 20-30 friends and family and a good cover band will have 70 people in the bar unless its a special bar night for the year. Also bar owners don't pay bands squat and it usually barely covers the gas money to haul everything to the gig after paying the sound man.
