LF a Electrician

Is anyone in the reef club an electrician? I would like to do some electrical work for my tank but I am just not comfortable doing it myself.

Install a GFCI or AFCI at the socket level or on the breaker box itself. Depending on what gauge of wiring I have I might want to install another circuit. In general I want to find a way to make my setup a lot safer and flexible for future equipment. I also want to find a way to clean up the cords running all over the place under my stand. My electrical knowledge is very limited so I really just need someone who has done a lot of electrical work around a tank and could provide suggestions on ways to clean up and make my setup a lot safer.

well i could probably help you out. I dont do alot of residential. But I do it everyday at work. Is ita 15 or 20 amp circuit? This will determain if you should run 14 or 12 guage wire. Oh can I add that taing the National Electric Code class for home wiring was worse than going to the Denstist. Its not really to difficult if you just want to put a GFCI in or put in AFCI in. They are different and work a little differently. The problem is Time. Lol sorry PHIL I just woke up they dang flu shot had me sleep in all morning.

What I am thinking I would like to do is install a dedicated 20 amp circuit with GFCI or AFCI (need to understand which is really better for a tank). I would also like to protect the current circuit (15 amp) with GFCI or AFCI. I would then split my equipment between the two circuits.

Depending on the cost, what I would really like to do is build a small power box for my stand which would allow me to organize my cords much better than what they are now. This is the area I need the most advice on how to do best. I have seen a couple build threads were people have done this and it looks awesome.

David,
If you are looking just for a cord organizer, go to the guitar store on Colesium where pep boys used to be, by roller dome north. They have a DJ plug that is a strip bar that I believe has 8 or 10 plugs in it, and each one has its own switch. Very useful to keep things organized. It also has a 15 amp fuse in it. I have one, and will probably get a second one. They are around $30 give or take.

Fireform - Yeah, I have seen those and I am definitely considering how they could clean things up for me. What kind of electrical work have you done in the past? How is your tank currently setup?

I have all my running of 2 different outlets. I couldn't tell you off hand if they are on the same circuit or not. I have most of my big stuff plugged into my DJ bar. I have a seperate strip for my heaters and my phosban reactor. I have my seios and sump light on a different plug on the other side of my stand.

I wired my garage and my parents house.

David:
Ijust got a DJ strip today there are 8 plugs on it,and they are $29.99.
Looks like it will do the job that i want it to do,and it just might help you too.
