LF Fish/ Reptile medication

My friend is looking for Baytril Amikacin for his Koi.

I'm sure where exactly to get it locally and a quick search online says that its medication for reptiles and fish. I'm wondering if any LFS/Pet stores would sell it, I suggested the Vet.
He wanted it in a shot form so he could inject the wounded fish?
Does anyone know anything about this medication? I'm clueless lol.

Does anyone else know of other treatments for injured Koi?

Thanks,
Tony

Tony,

Baytril (Enrofloxacin) and Amikacin are both antibiotics. Does your friend suspect a bacterial infection? Is the fish being quarantined? Sometimes the act of treating fish (especially with injectables) can cause unneeded stress and put the fish at greater risk of death from the stress. Also, injecting in an inappropriate location can cause problems as well (accidental injection into vital organs instead of the open coelomic cavity for example). Not to mention, repeated doses of injectable antibiotics may cause some unwanted affects to the surface (skin/scales) of the fish.

Ideally, he should have a qualified aquatics veterinarian perform an assessment. I know a few veterinarians who specialize in fish medicine. If you would like to PM me your friend's info I can get him in touch with one of them. Let me know.

Thanks for the response Richocet!

All I know is that the fish is injured and he didn't really tell me anything else. I'll talk to him more about it when I get the chance. I would give you his information, but his English isn't very good yet so it would be difficult to communicate..

No problem Tony. If he can separate the fish and it's eating well, I believe FAOIS still sells medicated flake food. Double check with John over there though.
