LF Water Changes

I'm looking for 30-40gl of a saltwater water changes from a tank(s) that have been set up for 1 year+ looking in Scootsdale/tempe
Thanks

Call Reef Culture and see if they'd be willing to do a small water change on one of their coral systems.

there is nothing special about water from an established tank.

you should be able to get some beneficial bacteria from water it not as much as youd want. maybe use a gravel vac to get more bacteria filled water??
used filter material works better.

....my comment stands.

Not to be confrontational but where are you getting your facts from?

I have heard the contrary to your comments many times, personally I don't see how there would be NO difference between freshly mixed salt water and water from an established tank. I find it hard to believe there is NO bacteria present at all that could be beneficial to the tank.

instead of wasting your time with the water, you should swap a couple pounds of live rock with another established tank ever year or so.

I believe xgame2k is correct. There may be some beneficial bacteria in the water, but not enough to break down a source of ammonia. Furthermore, like xgame said use live rock, or a piece of filter media that has sat in your sump for several weeks. However, we could be more helpful if we knew what you were trying to accomplish with the established tank water?

Yeah I was aware that it wasn't as effective as live rock.

Just curious since I have heard that it does help a few times.....

I'm sure established tank water could be beneficial in certain applications (not sure what kind of applications), however we do not even know what Terrance is wanting it for.

I was wanting established tank water because I thought if I put 65gls of new saltwater in it will over power the 30gls of established tank water I have I will be adding 100+ pounds of rock as soon as i get the money

I stand with xgame on this one. Head over to the chemistry forum (one of my favorites) and ask randy or highland or tmz about this. Beneficial bacteria do not populate in the water column period. The only thing you will be getting from used water is well....used water with semi-depleted trace elements etc. Your better off using live rock from an established tank or live sand from the same to seed your tank. Just use the fresh mix unless your just trying to save $$ on the saltwater for a first time fill, which I am totally cool with and I don't blame you one dang bit LOL.

I don't agree with the no bacteria in the water theory but that's another thread I think.

However, I do agree that using the used water isn't a good idea. For example, I just did my water changes, I have 20 gallons sitting in buckets waiting to dump. If you were to test that water for nitrates, phosphates etc. you would get a reading. This is something I just took out of my tank because I needed to get this stuff out.

If you are adding this to a new tank this old water will promote algae growth and could slow calcification in stony corals.

I think using established rock is the way to go.
