LFS Doesn't quarantine

New LFS has nice fish selection but they do NOT quarantine or treat their display tanks. I plan on quarantining anyway but was wondering if this seems right. Should I even consider buying from there?

It is almost impossible for a LFS to properly quarantine due to livestock turnover. If the store is doing any kind of business, most fish will not be on the premises long enough to have completed a meaningful quarantine. To do it right, they will have a hard time staying in business.

That is why a smart consumer always does their own quarantine, as you are planning.

It is probably more important that they are selective about their suppliers. As where they get their livestock and look up those suppliers.

+1 Its hard enough for most LFS to stay in business due to online competition. Taking on the burden/expense of quarantining all the fish would be the nail in the coffin for many. There are some LFS which quarantine to varying extents, but expect to pay anywhere from 25-50% above regular retail for that service.

Since some places put inverts or corals in some of their tanks with fish, copper would be a problem.

Personally, my qt method is TTM with prazi on 2 of the transfers, then continued observation.

^^ Agree again; but I will say that I don't understand why more LFS don't separate out their fish and coral/invert systems so they can use copper in the former. To cut down on their own losses. However, any LFS that does this is probably only running subtherapeutic copper so they aren't doing you (the customer) any favors.

The probably best LFS here in the Bay Area has two separate systems for wild caught fish on one side (those can and will be treated with copper if needed) and another series of systems for corals, inverts, and captive bred clownfish.

A second LFS here has now almost exclusively captive bred fish.
The handful of wild caught fish are kept in an isolated fish only tank.

Unfortunately, a third large LFS here mixes fish and inverts and generally never treats his fish. That's the place to go when you want to see fish with all kinds of infections... I would be extremely cautious to buy anything wet there.
