Thanks

Thanks Jason

Yeah, the nigricans is NOT a hardy species by all accounts. In fact, if you purchase one of these, you can rest assured of having a dead tang within 3 months.

The japonicus is supposed to be much much hardier and actually has a pretty good chance of making it in captivity.

OH, and the reason for the scientific names is that both of these fish are known as the Powder Brown Tang within the hobby.

Yeah right, you guys are just trying to make those of us not scientific-name inclined to scratch our heads and go...eehhhh? japo-lapo-uppa-whatalus? :eek2: :D

I felt left out... the big fish fuy was usin' his big fancy names.

No, seriously Kiowascout, I posted those to help illustrate that very fact, and that perhaps someone out there may have the japo-lapo-uppa-whatalus that you want....

I know you have already contacted Spike, but have you tried Kevin? He did a much better job at locating a fish for me once I gave him the scientific name..

Isn't the nigricans usually knows as the "Gold-Rim Tang"?

I had one of these last year, and it was doing quite well for about 4-5 months until the gf decided to nuke my tank. You don't even want to know what I lost in addition to this tang.

When I got it, it was fat, healthy and it ate Caulerpa with gusto. It did take some prepared foods here and there, but I don't know how successfull you'd be long-term without a good natural food source for it.

Say what? You never asked me to locate a fish for you. Anyway check out reefhotspot.com the owner there can get just about anything but it may take some time because he will only ship a fish if it is healthy. He may actually have one in stock right now if the pic on the website is accurate.

Sorry Spike,, That was the one I was looking for in your absence, I was referring to Kevin. He brought it in a kept it for a couple weeks to ensure healthyness.

I would have run it past you, but you were out of town during that time.

I was having a dickens of a time finding a Centropyge argi...

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c205/jmkarcz/p_66609.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a>

Now we've found a source or 12 for these little guys... I'll need like 1 male to several females.. as angels form harems. My overall plan was to breed something someday... so I always work in pairs and proper bereeding amounts... at the quantity that I need, I just get slaughtered if I buy 5 at the retail price of 35.99 that ithe in town shops want. The site that Kass found last night is REALLY getting me excited as it sounds like the go out and catch their stock themselves. I may be able to specify a breeding "bundle" of these little guys... I'm going to check into this when I get closer, but the plan I have for that 300 has really got me excited.

Fred,

you are right. some call the nigricans the gold rim tang, as well as, the white cheek tang. But even on some of the more popular websites, both are listed as Powder brown tang.

Spike, I will check out reefhotspot. It appears that if that is the actual fish, it has been in stock since february. I am just very leery of the online fish thing. I suppose I'll have to bite the bullet one of these days and just do it though.

Getting a fish from there would be less risky than getting one from a wholesaler IMO. I know people that have aquired leapord wrasses from him. He really does a fine job with his fish and has a 14 day guarantee.

Jason,

I have all the time in the world. I am in no hurry to purchase the fish just to have it. I would like to ensure that I get not only what I want, but one that isnt going to croak a few days after I bring it home.
