LFS in Albuquerque

Jay508

STARS Vice President
Greetings-
Coming to Albq. from Las Cruces and was wondering where the local fish stores are in Albq. The only one I know of is Southwest Reef Co. on Menaul.

Thanks

That is the only LFS in town.

You can try fins and critters
940 Eubank NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112

and Clarks
11200 Menaul Blvd NE
Albuquerque, NM 87112

4914 Lomas Blvd NE
Albuquerque, NM 87110

Most people will walk in to Fins and Critters and then walk right out since it smells gross. Last I heard Clarks has a very very small salt water section.

Thanks.

I think we will just make Southwest our only destination. I heard it has been recently remodeled and pretty large.

Yep!! Nice and newly remodeled. Very impressive, but also very expensive. If I were you I would shop around. Clarks might not be much to look at but it can definitely save some money by shopping there. Sometimes if you go to Clarks on shipment day and buy stuff as soon as it is shipped in, they will even cut you a better deal.

I would say to to Southwest Reef they are well educated and informed and willing to take the time to service your needs even past closing. I went to Clarks about 20 minutes before closing and was going to buy something from the reef tank when they turned the light out on me and told me to come back the next day. There was no warning they were closing and didn't give us any attention when we were ready to pay. They said the registars were already shut down. Pretty poor service, just pushed us out the door. On the flip side we went to Southwest Reef and the store had closed Rob and Jen went out of their way to explain and help us with our questions way past closing even when I just ended up buying snails and crabs for my tank. Very impressed with the continuous service at Southwest Reef and definately willing to spend alittle extra for the excellent service.

i dont think SWR is more expensive than clarks when i first got into saltwater i shopped around and there was only a difference of 2 or so bucks between stores some had things cheaper than the other and like monsoon said i would pay an extra 2 dollars for the AWESOME customer service you get at SWR i call all the time with ridiculous newbie questions I have and they answer every one big ups to rob and the group at SWR

Yea sounds good. not to worry about looking for the cheapest fish rather looking to see what Albuquerque has to offer in the coral department. I like the fact that SWR seems to be taking very good care of you guys up there, that is important. I personaly have never minded paying a few extra bucks for something if it supports a good store. In this hobby, and in life as well, something is worth whatever another person is willing to pay for it. Eye of the Beholder so to speak.

We are kind of spoiled down here. El paso has 5 fish spots and a great reef club to boot. I also take care of 180g reef tank at NMSU which I find a privalage as the tank had been neglected for about 2 years till ELMAR reef club and myself took a notice. Now it looks great!

Albuquerque Aquarium and SWR tommorrow. Should be fun.

southwest have some nice equipment but their coral are quack, no rare exotic ones. just basic coral and their rediculously pricey as hell got rip off many times when first started into the hobby...

I am sure that the local reefers would be happy to see Orange PPE at 300 a polyp at SWRC.

I may be biased but still if you are looking for outrageously priced coral do like everyone else that wants it and order it online.

yup that would be nice but they dont even cost that much. am just a collector, i also collect basic ones like mushcroom and such. but i think its too much for wat they priced for regular coral. and the fishes, LOLZ okie lets not go there either. am sure everyone knows what am talking bout already. and yes i also order online more then i buy local.

You're a good sport.

But you have to be patient as well. Rob gets some pretty nice pieces every so often. I once got a rock of about 300 or so polyps of Radioactive Dragon Eyes for $50.

not sure wats good sport mean, but okie. lucky!! thats an awesome price, never had any luck with that place. but i did with clark on san meteo, deb hook me up with 200pound of fiji live rock for $2.50 per pound. i picked them up right when the rock delivery to them. the pieces were just redicoulouly, amazingly gorgoues!! u just got to see my tank to believe it!! =D.....

Yeah it all comes from the same place. No matter what Rob or anyone says at Southwest Reef Company. He just charges more for it.
As for the "radioactive dragon eye for $50"*ISRAEL* of course the prices are cheaper! You used to work there. You get the employee discount! Or at least I hope...
It sure is nice to go by Southwest and LOOK at all of the beautyful corals and fish. It is so much fun for the whole family!!!
If you buy online you'll do just fine!

xXReefXx when I said good sport I meant your don't have to start throwing dirt around.

Just so you know this is pretty much how and why the last version of the NMOK started to slow down. People are afraid to get slammed by the 'know it alls' and don't show up to the meetings because of it.

Just so you know the Dragon Eye deal was before I worked there.

+1 for seesick.. correct me if am wrong but i think SWR get their fish the same vendor as petco and petco is alot cheaper. =D.. i went to SWR one time when they got their new shipment in and the box the fishes was in were exactly the box that petco gets when they get their shipment in lolz. but once again i could be wrong!! just to let all the local knows that if you want a higher survival rate with your fish while save your money. go to petco, they have new shipment in every tuesday morning. come around 9 to 10 and u can just pick the fish up while their acclimating them in the original bag they were shipped in. =D

Right on Reefy! What Reefy XXX says is true. You can even go to Clark's on Tuesday's and do the same thing. The majority of what we all are paying for it is overhead. Big store, big tanks = lots of overhead. Well regardless everyone has their own opinions. Saying something positive about a store other than Southwest is not throwing dirt. People should be able to state their opinions and or facts. The fact of the matter is Southwest is more expensive than everywhere else, and it all comes from the same place anyway! Even Petco gets their shipments from the LA distributors
As far as NMOK the only know it all I know is Rob and Jen and they don't go to meetings anymore. Too political for them I guess...This is a hobby and just all fun. I think it makes it a little more exciting when people have different opinions and then share them with everyone else. No one is hurting anyone physically or financially (unless you are shopping at Southwest the financial part will kill ya) It's just all for fun. Don't get your filter socks in a bunch, it's all good! Rob told me he had his best CHristmas ever anyway.

1st of all, am not a mr. knows it all so stop abbreviate everything you write i would appreciated and watever NMOK means. ur probably have a good connection with SW cause am sure no way he would give anyone else that deal. i have more chance of hitting the lottery then that lolz. by the way i would post some pictures of my tank but i have a egggrate rag over the front of the aquarium to hold all my overgrown coral and its basically cover most of the view. everyboday is welcome to swing by and check out my tank if you like!!

I agree that SW is a little pricier than other stores, but at SW you get much better customer service and everyone that i have talked too in there is very knowledgeable and informative. Rob will answer questions for you all of the time irregardless if you buy anything. The main problem for me is that i live in Rio Rancho, so none of the stores are close to me. Most of the other stores that i have been in, Clarks, petco, fins and critters never want to answer your questions, just want to sell you stuff. I am relatively new to saltwater also and would like to get together with other reefers to exchange ideas, frag and equipments swap, get togethers, etc. But it seems like there is no one in the area that wants to do this due to all of the bickering that has plagued the various reef club of Albuquerque. If any one has any questions or ideas, please email me at xmenx2dad@yahoo.com My PM function is not currently working. thanks

hey xmenx am down to get together to trade coral and exchange ideas or watever related to reef. just a few days ago i sold a local reefer my t5 lights. when they came by to pick them up they saw my reef and admire my tank so much that they plan to tear down their 3years old 125g reef tank for rearrangement. i volunteer to help them out and they trust me enough to let me tear their whole tank down and leave all the rearranging decision to me. i spent literally 8hrs of free labor to rearrange their tank and love to see their impressive expression on their face!! anyway that was kinda off topic but lets make this hobby fun and affordable to save the reef!! anyone disagree??
