I am in the Cleveland area (east side Chardon). While i am here is there any cool LFS i can visit?

Also if anyone in your club is looking to unload a IC 250W MH ballast i am looking for one.

I live on the east side (little Itlay) and I always drive to Vermillion or Strongsville to buy stuff. I don't know anywhere else around here that I would recommend.

So all you people looking at this thread live in the Cleveland area but can not recommend a LFS?

I live an hour south of Cleveland and 1.5 hrs north of Columbus. I make the drive to Salty Critter whenever I need something reef related. It's worth the drive if you have time.

There isn't a LFS worth recommending on the east-side that I know of. That's probably the reason you didnt' get any responses. I know that I read your thread and thought... good LFS on the east side... nope. I don't think it would've been too productive to just reply with a "no" so I waited for others to respond with a couple of east side LFS even if they aren't highly recommended. Nobody did and that's why there are so many views and no replies. Not because we aren't friendly but because nobody could give you the answer you wanted.

Hope you do take the time to visit the LFS listed above as there are some good ones.

Enjoy your visit!

thanks for the replys i will check out the recommended. I was not trying to be rude...sorry about that. I did not to use the phoen book because i was looking for recommened places.
i will with out a doubt enjoy my visit i as i do every time i come...I will be back atleast 2 time this football season to catch a couple of Browns games. i am a hube Browns fan.

I get attitude from some of the people at Salty Critter. I get a lot of "well you can do that but it would be stupid" kinda feelings from them. I guess I like my salespeople to be knowledgeable but not opinionated.

Wow I never had that problem are you sure you have the right place. perhaps you are confussing this with another LFS lets say Aquatic tech? or maybe the truth just hurts

After emailing them about getting some oolite sand for a DSB I went in and the owner (I think) said "Oh you're the guy who thinks that oolitic sand is what's needed for a DSB." When I told him that's what I had been reading all along his response was a shoulder shrug and "well, that's wrong. A full bed of 1-2mm argonite is best." I also asked someone there for a daylight T5 bulb and he had no idea what T5 was and what a daylight bulb was. They also tried to convince me that buying their $7.50/lb cured live rock was cheaper than paying $2.50/lb over the internet and curing it myself because I wasn't factoring in intangibles. I guess they think I'm going to need $500 worth of salt to do my water changes.

I wasn't impressed. The people seem hit or miss.

All I have to say...is you better get your stores right before you start throwing out a bashing like that...

No way would anyone at SaltyCritter in Vermilion, Ohio.... you were in Vermilion, Ohio in the South Shore Plaza right???

A. Would have made a comment like that and B. Would have said they don't know what a T5 bulb was.... in fact if you go to the stores website you can see pretty darn quick that they have posted front and center info about the new top of line T5 bulbs by UV Lighting...

Salty Critter has the most up-to-date information, products and service that is reef related in probably the entire Midwest...I would say country but I have not visited too many West Coast Reef stores so I cannot comment on them.

Salty Critter has alot of faithful and loyal customers and friends on this website. I think you need to make sure your "newbie" status hasn't also affected your memory as to which store you were in when what you said took place... I have a hard time believing one word of it.

$7.50 a /lb for cured live rock.... I have been going to SC for years and have never seen live rock that high... in fact most of the time you find what they call cured "base rock" which is usually better and more colorful than some premium cured rock for about $2-3 /lb. There "premium" rock is usually only a couple dollars more a lb.

Either you have the wrong store or there are new owners/employees at the SC that have taken over in the last month that I am not aware of.

Hmm I have never had that problem either. Then again I never really ask for advise from LFS I just go in get what I want/need say hello talk a little and then say good bye.

lawdog,

Dont' know what to say except that

a) He did say that about the DSB, although when I was in there a week earlier a different person said exactly what I have been reading on RC --- that 4" of oolite is best.

b) When I asked for the T5 light the guy he started going through the PC bulbs. When I reminded him I was looking for a T5 to replace a broken GE Daylight, he didn't know what I was talking about. Someone else came by and pointed to the large stack of T5 bulbs they had, but he had no idea how to read them, which one was daylight or which one fit a 48" fixture. The two people suggested I wait for the owner to get back as he was at the bank. When he got back he knew exactly what I needed.

c) Not sure if the rock was $6.50 or $7.50 as I never had any intention of buying it.

I have been there 1/2 dozen times now and sometimes they are helpful and sometimes they aren't. Like finding a good LFS, you need to make sure you find a good salesperson at the LFS as well. After spending 3 months researching a SW setup before I added any water to my tank, it became evident who knew the various approaches to take and how to help me cater to mine versus the people who only knew their personal way of doing things.

MJAnderson,

the best adivce can be found on RC and the alike forums. Your research will take you farther in less time

This hobby has changed so much in a few years, it my be hard to keep up

I must admit that I got that same "advice" about the live rock when I was at SC last summer. I ended up getting my live rock shipped from PA. However, that has not changed my mind that SC is probably the best lfs around these parts for reefers, although if you ever get to Florida or California or even Atlanta ...well let's just say it's all relative. I can't recommend Mike and Danielle at the Coral Shoppe enough for their livestock. The bottom line is we should support all those lfs that support us (C-SEA).

i live on the east side and drive up to RMS in willoughby if i need something quick..

its not the best but when you complain and get the manager on the phone they will deliver stuff to your door that day ;)
