LFS no good

Walked in to my LFS to get some clownfish after competing my fishless cycle and they said they don't like fishless cycles because it's not a real cycle and said my tank will crash, glad you guys showed me better

Wow. I've had my two tanks for a year on one and a few months with the other. Fishless cycle on both. 7 total fishes and no losses at all except some crabs and snails and an emerald. Fish and shrimp are all good :).

Since its your only option get only what you need there and doesn't sound like a need to build a good relationship or take advice from them. Try to find a good local club.

I guess chemistry is not these peoples strong suit.

I would be inclined to ask about dosing copper supplements for blue and green colors in your SPS, cuz, you know, those are the oxidized copper colors. It only makes sense...

( )

LFS's don't know everything, they are not THE authority in reef keeping and usually there employees aren't top notch reef keepers.

They work with us to get us what we want, i don't want to have to order everything. Take any advice, on here included, with caution.

just say'n...

not defending the lfs, but maybe it was just one bad employee, or maybe you misunderstood the person, . as a small business owner sometimes its hard to hire all top notch employees, the funds just aren't there. don't judge the whole store on one employees advice.

I have to agree. The more we support, the more it grows. The more people in this hobby, the easier (and less expensive) things will be.

That's about the only point I agree with though...

more people in hobby, wouldn't make things less expensive. not an economics major, but higher demand leads to higher prices, when the supply cant grow as fast as the demand. seeing most saltwater fish come from the sea as do most corals currently . might lead to higher prices. so stay out people. lol

Last weekend I overheard a young staffer at a LFS tell a customer a Yellow tang "would stay small" if kept in a "small aquarium" when asked by the customer if it would "get big?"

He also recommended a skunk cleaner shrimp as a solution to an algae problem. "That's why they call them cleaner shrimp" he said.

This all was in about five minutes. It would be fun to follow this kid around for a day with a video camera and make a greatest hits compilation.

yes, there are 2 people at my lfs who flat out suck. lucky for me when i walk normally the owner comes right over too me to help me, probably because i spend way to much money there. yes i know not everyone has this advantage. my advice ask to people. aska few questions, remember them look up the answer when you get home if the guy was correct you can trust him, if not dont

When you decide to get a fish tank, you're taking on the responsibility to care for creatures/animals that were perfectly fine in the ocean and taken out so you can have them at home. The more bad information that goes out there the more animals that suffer and die. LFS will tell you its perfectly fine to put a yellow tang and a hippo in a 30g cube, and those animals are going to die. If the customer was educated against those decisions and showed what was acceptable, those tangs or other fish could be put in the correct tank size and live out happily.

A lot of people forget that this "hobby" has lives involved and it drives me crazy. So when a LFS employee is giving me absolutely wrong information and arguing his wrong points, I wont go back and support that store because he's spreading that nonsense to other people and coming off as a "professional"

I understand that there are good LFSs and bad ones, good employees and bad ones -- this is true in almost any business.
Be that as it may, I take it as my responsibility NOT to support a bad LFS. I don't care if they are the only LFS in the area, I think that any store that offers bad advice, stocks and sells sick fish, and does not take it upon themselves to rectify the problems is bad for the hobby.
The last time I was in my LFS, there was a tank of butterfly fish swimming sideways, covered in ICH. The store clerk told a mother and young child, "They are just adjusting, they will all be fine."
I do not support this store.
In a time when reefers and our hobby are increasingly under attack for our part in the decimation of the world's reefs, supporting stores that act irresponsibly is, in my opinion, irresponsible.

im surprised LFS are even still around. I shop there sometimes out of convience, but if it went away entirely....

I wouldnt care.

That's why you don't tell them about your tank you buy stuff there and ask questions on here
