LFS Quote

I went to the lfs, and had them give me a quote on a new setup:

50gal glass w/overflow and 5 holes, black back
Oak stand and 12" canopy, painted black.

The quote was around $650. Does this seem like a fair price, or does it seem high?

Its painted Black, is there black oak?

Man I really need to learn to read the entire post before asking questions. Isnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t oak expensive? Wouldnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t it be a waist to paint oak black?

i got my 100 gallon with, stand, new canopy, decent lighting, protein skimmer, live rock and sand for around that price. and the tank is in fantastic condition. if you can wait and dont need a new tank you can find great deals in the sellers section......

I have a reef ready AGA 80 gallon that I will be selling soon. It has a cherry colored closed stand and canopy. The stand has locks on the doors so kids can't get into them. The built in overflow is a 3 sided hex with a 1.5" bulkhead in it. Dimentions: 48" long X 18" wide X 21" tall

The tank is two years old with no major issues, looks practically brand new with special floatation base to protect from earthquakes. Without sump = $299, with sump $369, with sump + Quiet one 4000 return pump & all plumbing $400

Don't buy new, it's a too expensive! Plumbing parts alone can run into the hundreds, plus a sump, plus everything else you'll be lucky if you can afford to put saltwater in it :D

Thanks. I didn't think it was too high, but I know I can get it cheaper. I've been watching for a used setup, but haven't seen anything yet. The space where I want the tank is only 3 feet long, so I need a 36" tank. I also want to keep my existing 250w MH, so a 50 gallon setup makes the most sense to me. I'll keep my eye out for a few weeks.

I recently saw another thread about Kevin's stands, and planned to call him if I need to have something built.

I agree with not buying a new saltwater tank. Usually someone buys a tank, sets it up then a year later they're selling it because it's too much work. On recycler I've seen tanks 180-240 gallons everything except the livestock for $1200. Try craigslist.org also, you'll find them even cheaper. There was a tank 540 gallons with steal stand and I think a 80 gallon sump for A good price, but it was sold.

That's a great deal! I really wish I had the room and equipment. I have everything I need for up to a 50 gal already. When I set up my 20gal Via Aqua a while back, I planned ahead :) I actually have a stand already, but am going to give it to my friend along with my current tank.

i also bought my 50 gallon 2 years ago for $150. all i bought was lights.....everything else came with it.
