LFS says you dont need to Quarantine?!?!?!?

I want to buy a regal or a purple tang and the LFS that I go to has both and he told me there is no need to put the fish in a Q-Tank for a couple of weeks because they have been at his store for 2 weeks in copper. He said that if I take it from his store then put it in a Q-Tank for a couple of weeks and then put him in my display tank, that I will to get them to eat again in a new environment which can kill them (Specially the regal). He said there is no need to Quarantine them being that they have been in cooper for weeks. What do you guys think?

ASk him to guarentee that you will get no ich in your tank. Then you will find out if he really thinks its safe....

I would ask him to hold the fish for at least another week and then take them home..... Why move them now when they are still in QT

This is what I do with my LFS.... I ask him to QT all my fish in copper for 4 weeks before I pick them up..... If you are a regular customer he should not have an issue doing this for you.....

Enjoy....

:D

I think. . .It depends! :D

That's the 'usual' answer for this hobby.

Did the LFS use the proper level of copper? How did they monitor it? Are they sure the copper level was therapeutic?

I just bought 6 fish from an LFS that uses copper too. I asked the concentration. It was below the therapeutic/treatment level. Thus, the copper means nothing with regards to treating the fish. The fish are in my QT now.

Don't trust the LFS? Ask for some of his water and test it yourself. If the fish isn't in water with above the minimum level of copper for treatment AND that level has been maintained day-in and day-out, then your LFS has done nothing.

It's a matter of trust. If your LFS is sure they have done it right, then they should have no trouble giving you a guarantee that if you put in your QT that the fish will not become ill from any of the diseases that copper kills.

mmgm, i see you are in New Jersey. What is this store?

Eagle Reefs in Hillsborough, New Jersey..... I usually pay for the fish and then pick it up when ready.....

No quarantine because he had the fish in copper for two weeks? Hogwash IMO. Just too many things that aren't treated by copper, and too many fish comming through a stores tanks to consider the store a QT period. If the QT is properly set up, there is no reason what-so-ever for a fish to die due to QT.

Thatââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s what I thought. He was just saying otherwise. I told him if you are putting the fish under Quarantine what if you add other fish to the same system in the middle of the process? And I told him what about other diseases that can come that copper doesnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t cure. He said I worry to much and I read to many posts and that I would just kill the fish (mainly the regal) by trying to acclimate him twice. I think I am going to put him under Quarantine just to be on the safe side I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t want anything to happen to my display tank (so far so good).
Thanks guys!

As indicated by others that was poor advise. Sounds to me that you should shop around and find another LFS.

You should also note that some would argue that using copper as a prophylactic therapy is harmful to the fish ... since you need to QT at any rate you might consider purchasing the fish from another store that doesn't use copper.
