Is there such a thing as a no waterchange system?

My lfs said that he knows people who haven't changed water in 10 years lol. He said this can be achieved by a refugium and dosing. Is there such a system or is he high on cholesterol pills?

Ur opinions pls lol

You can do small daily water changes if you are willing to automate. Doing it manually would be a royal PIA. You can do ~10% weekly - what many (most?) people. You can do 20% biweekly. Or monthly. I usually go about 6 weeks. Or never do water changes - just top off with rodi as needed.

The more often you do a water change the less you will likely have to worry about dosing. The water changes will take care of the needs of the corals for many people, especially in newer/smaller systems. You will also have to deal with excess nutrients less often - they'll be removed as you change the water.

The longer you go between changes the more need you will have for efficient replacement of Ca/Alk/Mg/etc. Automated dosing will serve you best then. You will also need a means of nutrient export. A refugium with macro algae (Cheato?) or something similar will do the job for you there.

There are as many ways to keep a successful system running as there are successful reefers.

Honestly I don't do water changes and I have a pretty heavy sps/lps bioload. I dose trace elements and keep my phosphates and nitrates at where I'd like them to be. The way I see it, if my corals are happy and all my parameters look good then I just let Mother Nature be. But every tank is different this is just my experience
