LFS's near Monroeville, PA

Elmer's Aquarium and Petland are the best in that area.

Seahorse is about a 20 minute ride on the turnpike (Route 8)

Pet Supplies Plus has some stuff also, but not much.

thanks
what about the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium. Is that worth checking out? How far from Monroeville.

The zoo is worth checking out.

I would say it is about 35 minutes from monroeville.

Wet pets is great- but it is closer to 60 minutes away from "under the sea" or "seahorse".

If you take 79 South from Cranberry and get off on the Bridgeville exit is is only 35 minutes, I do it all the time!!!

"Seahorse" is 20-25 minutes from 79 and "under the sea" is about 10 minutes from 79 - and wet pets is about 10 minutes from the bridgeville Exit - unless your traveling at 2 AM. I live 4-5 blocks from Seahorse. So 35 minutes on 79 ( assuming no major traffic or construction) and 5-10 minutes to get from/to 79 to the stores= 45-55 minutes. Like I said= about 60 minutes one way. Dont get me wrong - I go to wet pets and think it is worth the travel occasionally. Just letting someone know who has time limits what the real time frame will be to get to/from wet pets.

Yeah, really depends on the time they are traveling. On a weekend, the trip from Under the Sea in Cranberry to Wet Pets in Peters Township is 35-45 minutes (as long as you don't get lost! and depending on if you drive 55 or keep up with the traffice going 75!!). During rush hour it can be an hour+ as the Bridgeville exit of 79 is very busy.

Just to throw another one into the mix, AquaWorld is halfway between Under the Sea and Wet Pets :p

You don't want to know how fast I make the crannberry to pittsbrugh trip :)

And we all thought that the 7' "thing" you made was a skimmer....More like a rocket. Reminds me of the coyote :D

do you guys know of any others around my area? I'm in Carnegie/bridgville/greentree. We usually go to Elmer's, petland, pet supply plus all in Monroeville or Seahorse. Maybe this wet pets is close. Under the Sea is on rt 8?

Pet Supplies Plus in Bridgeville is decent. There is another up the road called Animal Crackers that has decent fish, but is expensive.

Wet Pets is about 5 miles south of South Hills Village.

Under the Sea is on Rt 19 in cranberry, Seahorse is on Rt 8.

In my opinion, Wet Pets is much better than Elmers. They can be pricey, but their selection is much better.

went to petland today - was in Monroeville for a seminar- and there is no question that the salt area has improved vastly. Was there for about 15 minutes and no one was in the area- the salt person must have been off.

I bought all my crabs at Petland in Monroeville and they're all doing well. Went to pet supply in Bridgeville yesturday. Not to bad at all. Livestock prices aren't the best, but the guy was very knowledgable and took the time to answer all my questions.
I still like seahorse the best. Although they're probably the most expensive, their tanks are always clean, and livestock looks healthy. Plus they have some critters that I couldn't find at any of the other pet stores.
Think I'll check out wet pets and under the sea this weekend.
Probably shouldn't though...every time I walk into a saltwater department I spend about 3 times what I wanted to originally. lol
Didn't you say there will be a part in your seminar about impulse buying Kelly? :D

I stopped by Petland in Monroeville today...Their salt selection def has improved since the last time I was there....and they were running a great 2 for $80 deal on corals. However the staff member they had working in the aquatics dept was horrible....I asked him about this great yellow leather that they had displayed...He was like well I dont know if you have enough light...I have 2x250w HQI and about another 200w in supplements....Then when I asked him what he was running over the tank the coral was in he replied that he didn't know....It looked like 2 VHO and a flourescent (you would think on coral special days they would have a salt expert on staff that could answer a simple question like that)....Maybe 4 tubes max over a 90g....So if you go here don't count on getting expert advice as it can be hit or miss....mostly miss

ya, had a similar experience at Petland. I asked the person to show me what Emerald crabs they had in, and this person had no idea what an Emerald crab was. They pulled out a porcelain crab and said, oh here's one. lol
Luckily I knew what an emerald crab looked like, and dug it out myself.
Still a healthy lively little guy, but definatly not a place for a newbie like me to ask questions. Still I would buy there.

I don't like to bash...I know that some places hire one or two good people and fill the holes with inexperienced people. But if your offering a special to bring in the big guns (big spenders)....ie experienced reefers...I would def make sure I had a person there that could answer the simple questions and give them the resources (books) to delve into a subject if need be....but if they can't even identify an emerald crab I'd be very scared to purchase there again....those are very common in the industry...in fact I don't know a newbie that couldn't id one.... if the sales person can't do that.....WOW there is chances for craziness....that is almost the same as a sales person handing someone a doberman instead of a boxer...I think we should start holding these stores responsible for training their staff....No self respecting dog owner would buy from someone who would do something like that...why should we? I know that a great selection is a major draw but if they can't even identify the basics how well are they taking care of the exotics...or how well can they talk about their care....just my 2cents but I think now there are enough reef stores in PGH that we can demand the quality and exotics but also the knowledgable staff that we want....if only by shopping where its offered...
