I am getting my mantis today, do I need to have a glass top so he does not jump? or will I be ok without one?
Thanks,
-Glenn

I axed about this topic and as far as I've found out mantis shrimp don;t jump out of the water. They will hang out at the water level to ambush something far down or to pick off brine shrimp at the surface but I've never personally seen my N. Wennerae jump out of the water of their own power.

Depends on the species. Most gonodactylids do not jump very often, although some can clear a couple of inches. The one group where a cover is for small odontodactylids such as O. havanenisis, O. brevirostris and O. latirostris. Six cm animals can (and do) easily jump 10-15 cm. Even a large O. scyllarus can clear a few cm. Perhaps most surprising, last year I had a 11 inch Hemisquilla jump out of a tank with about 3 inches of freeboard.

I learned the other day that it's a good thing to have a cover over your bulbs. While using long chopsticks to pull some algae, our 4.5 inch O. S. came up and whacked the plastic cover over my PCs. When she's really hungry she's popped her whole head out of water to reach for food also.
