Depends on species. Bimacs usually live around 1.5 years, but they are almost all WC so, they live shorter in our tanks, because they are already a few months old when caught.
There has been some recent discussion on whether cooler water helps to extend the life in some species. Apparently there is/was an octopus at Dana Point that has lived in excess of two years.
Perhaps a chiller will be the new pre-requisite to keeping an octopus.
