life expectency of schooling fish

I have had a school of square box anthias for 3 years or so. They were huge and full grown when I got them. I recently lost 2 a few months apart. Water quality is perfect? I have been told that schooling fish have shorter lifespan. Does anyone have any input?

I never heard that but it wouldn't make a difference. It could have just been a problem with your tank. 3 years is a good time to have fish live.

nope if you read my post the tank had no problems. 3 years is ok I have had fish for 9+ years in other cases

My club had a talk given by Joe Yaiullo, (Atlantis marine world) said that with his big schools of Bartletts, his males were basically burning out in about 3 years, and thats in a 20K gallon reef. I think his squamis were fine, so you may want to talk to him.

I have heard that most Anthias only live to about 3 or so and then die off. Not only in our systems but in the ocean as well, kinda like survival of the fitest.

well since my male lost his girls. He barely comes out. He use to swim all day he must be depressed. Last night was the first time he didn't eat. I fear he is on hios way out as well. I guess I really could just be natural than.

The larger anthias (like your squares) have a moderate lifespan - six to nine years seems common, with the average being around seven.

The smaller species (like the abovementioned Bartlett's) are quite short-lived. Three to five years seems about average. Temperature seems to be a pretty significant factor for these fish - if the temps are above 80 degrees, three years seems to be the outside edge of their expected lifespan.

thanks everyone. I sounds like it was just their time. All my other fish are fine. The anthias were huge when I got them. Definately full adult size. So I guess three years from that point sounds about right. Maybe the male will cheer up and start comming around again? but he honestly seems depressed
