Light Fixture Blinding Me! Please help!

I got a new HID/T5 combo light fixture over my fish tank. I have it around 8" above the top of the tank, hanging from the ceiling. When you go close to the tank, or just sit on the couches around the room, the two actinic T5 bulbs just shine right in everyone's eyes and makes the whole room horrible to be in. Don't even get me started how annoying the 250W HID is too!

I tried lowering the light, raising it, tilting it so the lights shine on the wall behind it more, nothing works.

I finally put a piece of cardboard in front of the fixture temporarily and it worked great, but can I hang something in front of the light to prevent it from shining forward into everyones eyes? What material can this be?

The tank is a 45 gallon Oceanic Tek Tank and I don't know whether a canopy is an option on this tank or not but I would really hate to do a canopy if there is another way to fix this.

Thanks for the help.
