i have a 36x12x24 45g tank with soft corals. i currently have a 196w cf fixture. i am wanting to upgrade to t5 so i can keep lps, and maybe a few sps. what light fixture do you recomend? and would a 4bulb t5 36" fixture give me more light than my cf fixture? thanks!

Hi,

I would look at either the CurrentUSA Sundial as a good economical choice or the Sunlight Tek Hood if you want something more heavy duty.

The reason I would go Sundial instead of Current's regular extremee 36" is the Sundial has individual reflectors, which gives you more light output.

The Sunlight fixture hands above the tank standard, they have optional tank mounts for additional cost. Sunlight also has individual reflectors which are a little more high end and made in USA, i believe the ballast they use are USA Made as well, so quality should be a little higher then Current.

Sunlight is sold without bulbs or an acyrlic shield. So it's a more expensive unit. The shield is optional, many people use without them. You get more light output but the drawback is you can get water and more moisture in the fixture.

On your light output question. You really will be pretty close on intensity with compacts vs T5's. You might even be slightly brighter with your PCs. T5's just seem to be a better quality lamp, better spectrums etc.

You really should be able to keep LPS under your current lighting fine though and even some SPS.

thanks for your help Jason. would the sunlight fixture heat the tank to much,or would i need fans? thanks again

Very welcome.

On the Sunlight fixture, if you hang it so you have a few inches of space between your tank and fixture, i don't think you'll have much heat transfer into the tank at all.
