hi

i am quite new about macroalgae...
sorry if i sound dumb...

what lightings are suitable for macroalgae to thrive?

i have maidens' hair, caulerpa and the grape like algae

thanks

Andrew,

All of those algae like pretty intense lighting. I have two, 250w metal halide lamps (6500K) on my 75 gallon reef tank and those types of algae are growing prolifically. On a smaller tank like your 20g nano, 65 to 100 watts of light would probably be best.

HTH,
Kevin

ah
thanks
but i m putting it in a 20g refugium that has 3 partition
only putting it in one of the partition
thus, it will be 100w divide 3?

Andrew,

You will still need about 100w of light to provide sufficient photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) for the algae. Look into the hanging dome shaped light fixtures sold for reptile terrariums and the screw-in PC lamps that are about 45 watts each. I use two on my 'fuge and chaeto grows rapidly.

Id say 5,500k is ideal. Look for a point-source light like metal halide or HPS or incandescent flood lights. Fluorescents work, but not as well, in my experience.
