Could someone tell me how to know what low/moderate/medium/high are? Do each of these equal a certain PAR rating? I'm guessing putting a number on water flow is a more difficult. How do I know what these levels equal in water flow?
Some very generic numbers for lighting is low 50-100, medium 100-200, high 200-400+. It also depends on the spectrum and how well acclimated the coral is to the spectrum and intensity.
Below is a video from vivid aquariums for the flow part.
Funny you sent a link from Vivid. I live 20 minutes from their store and was in last week purchasing my first corals. The video was really good at explaining water flow and what to do and not to do with your powerheads so thank you for that.
I have a Hydra 26 HD. They rent a par meter for $20 a week. Maybe I should think about renting it then I can apply your numbers to give me a base of my tank lighting.
It's more of a judgement call in water flow than a number.
Low = barely moving anything
Moderate / Medium = You see the corals tentacles moving a bit but it isn't fierce.
High = blowing things around all over the place.
I contacted Vivid and was able to rent their PAR meter. I created a grid and took measurements from all over the tank. I now have a good idea of the lighting levels within my tank. Between the measurements and numbers you provided I have a great starting point for locating my corals. Thanks for all of the help!
Having access to a PAR meter every once and a while is a great help. It's great that they are willing to rent it out. I have had one for about 6 years and I can't begin to tell you how many times I've loaned it out or taken it to somebody's house to take readings.
Vivid is super helpful and it was awesome they rent the meter. I wish I could afford one to take periodic measurements and or after making lighting adjustments.
