Lighting dusk to dawn effect

I have a FOWLR, so no need for ultra lights. But my main light is a quad 48" 54w T-5, Plenty of light... I just would like to create a more natural "light-up" so that's it's not so intense/shocker when it fires up. I'm thinking to go with something like a inexpensive small PC or LED... Yes, 3 tanks: The new 235g, the old 72g and the 75g quarantine tank. Soon to be just the 1 235g...

Oh and I play bass for the Foo Fighters...

P.S. It's not a set-up(s) It's mass chaos! My wife is ready to kill me... 3 tanks will be combined to 1 by the end of the week. Oh wait, I forgot to mention, I just set-up a 4th... A quarantine for my quarantine... The raccoon butterfly isn't looking too well...
