Will begin tonight the MH will not run tommorow only the actinics. The next 2 days will be dark. Thursday will have actinics only with a 10 gallon water change on a 55 gal. Back to normal on friday. These pics are various shots of the tank some with flash and some not, hopefully the pics are good enough to see the brown around on the sand that I couldnt siphon out with the water change 2 days ago.

I take it you're doing this to try and get rid of the algae? If so, i doubt it will work because light is not really the problem. Its excess nutrients such as nitrates/phosphates and even tds i think. And how old is this tank? If its newer, it could just be normal algae...

No we were dicussing the effects on another thread and didnt want to hijack that one. The thread that we were refering to i the discussion was doing this and it cleared the sand bed if it is diatoms or algea the hypothisis is that they may convert back to nitrate or phos. and be removed by water change rather than using a gravel vac. Im also diong this because I dont like to vac the snad because im not sure what good stuff is coming out of the sand when this is done. Also I can reach around all of the rocks bases with the vac and if the browness can be spreadable than its a never endind battle, and as we all know the less battles in this hobby the better. The original poster also stated that his inhabitants never looked much better and were growing much faster than before is a good effect also.

I actually just did this to my tank and I had a growth explosion of my softies, its pretty cool

All lighting ran today and I must say that everything looks great all corals except for wellsophylia brain have much better color. All the shrooms look a little bigger and my rainbow colored Fl. rics have started splitting new ones. The finger leather has new spouts all over the place. The lps today have swollen much larger than before esspecially my caulestra. As for sps ,monti and stylophora have much more radiant look with more polyp extension. The only water parameter that was effected was the temperature it stayed on the lower side at 72 where normally stays 76.

the brown coloration on the sand did fade away in some areas but not everywhere. The water is crystal clear as is the glass. I have yet to find a negative side effect. Will get some pics up here soon.
