IMO, VHO is sufficient for derasas, gigas, and squamosas if they are fairly close to the light. I would be a little nervous about keeping croceas or maximas under VHOs, although some assert that this works. It depends on how well you'd like the clams to thrive. MH is best, but VHO can work for the less light-dependent species if done correctly.
