Lighting for Clams?

Quick, and probably easy question...I have a 60 gallon tank with 2X65watt 10,000K flourescent bulbs and 2X65watt Actinic bulbs.

If I place a Maxima pretty high in my tank, would it be ok? If not, what clams would do better under the lighting I have and where would they be placed in the tank?:rolleye1:

Thanks in advance!

FWIW

I know of others that have sucess with squamosas in low lighting, but I would not even try one of them with your current setup. You really need to have halides to have a clam "THRIVE" and not just live.

IMHO

Understandable, but are there any clams that would "thrive" in my current set-up or should I just wait 'til I get my dream tank of about 350gallons with a metal halide set-up on one side of the tank and VHO flourescents on the other so I can keep all kinds of corals and clams?

There are no clams that would thrive under that setup. I wouldn't even try the lower light clams like squamosa. They might scrape by, but I like to remind myself I could keep a dog alive by feeding him nothing but potato chips, but it's not fair for the dog

I had a 15 gallon tank (only 12" deep) with 2 65 watt PCs....and a squamosa wasn't too happy. THe second I got MH he was a VERY happy clam.

A Maxima, even high, would be under certain doom in that setup. I've seen and known people who have tried it, and the clam slowly starves to death over 4-6 months and they find an empty shell.

Not trying to bum you out, the truth is no clams would work in that setup as it is now...when you have MH, then it will be time to talk clams :)

Your dream tank sounds like a good idea for clams (under MH), but you may want to reconsider trying to keep everything.....softies on one side and SPS/clams on the other can be a ticking time bomb....chemical warfare between the two is a huge issue, and many people who even put one soft coral like a leather in a SPS tank start losing their SPS corals. This is why most tanks (most of those with SPS) have minimal to no soft corals, along with territory battles and smothering corals like mushrooms, xenia, etc.

I agree with Peabody

I would wait until you have the correct setup and are able to give your inhabitants the environment they require.

Will do, sometimes the truth hurts, but I am not going to subject animals to stupidity like some people do. No clams for now, but in the future, you will definitely be hearing from me.

Good call on your part,,and responsible for asking first before the purchase. This to me is a sign of a responsible reefkeeper, and one that will have great sucess if you stay on your current path.

Gee,
I kinda sounded like Yoda with that post.:strooper:

Abolutely....I have little respect for the folks that come here and say "I just picked up this pretty clam thing at the store, tell me how to take care of it...."

Kudos for beign responsible!

Thanks...it is just that I have seen too many animals killed due to irresponsible owners. These animals are just too beautiful and delicate to just throw them in some saltwater and see what happens.

Thanks again for the recognition, but also thank you guys for not sugar-coating the answer and telling me straight out that this is not feasible in my set-up. I love those people that "brag" about keeping animals in horrible set-ups and the animals thriving in THEIR tank, but for some reason to them thriving means that it has lived for over a week. Keep it real guys.

Thanks again.
