Lighting for Reef 92 Gallon Corner Tank

A humorous little note and a pat on the back for myself.

The rear part of my tank has been dim at night cause the PFO MH Pendant didn't come with a moon light.

So I bought this...

Well, when I aimed it down into the tank it was like two spotlights (or like a UFO was landing).

No matter how high I hung it, it was way too bright and focused.

Finally I got the smart idea to point it up into the MH pendant. When I did that, it dispersed the reflected light just right.

Nitrates and the overflow

Nitrates and the overflow

Ok, i have a question. I tend to have high nitrates, just nitrates, everything else no problem. I have tried everything, and i mean everything, with the exception of removing some of my fish to reduce bio load. I am currently starting AZ-No3, which is an enzyme that catalyzes maltase which ends up feeding the anaerobic bacteria that break down the nitrates in DSB and live rock. I will let you know how it goes. But.....

Here is the question. In my overflow i have the Mega Flow and corner overflow unit, which many of you seem to either have made or purchased. It just came to me that there must be a ton of food that settles to the bottom in the overflow, and sense the water is drawn down into the refugium at least three quarters the way up there is little to no flow or suction for anything that settles down in the back corner. Thus tremendous decay where no live rock or critters exist to bread down the heavy food.

I feed a mix of frozen food that i combine Formula 1 and F 2, fresh garlic, immune enhancing mushrooms (agaricus, choriolus, reishi, maitake- its called Immune Assist www.alohamedicinals.com), Artemisinin extract which is anti-parasitic. I feed two times a day, once on weekends and sometimes not at all on Sundays.
I feed mysis shrip and Cyclop-eze (frozen) three times a week.
I but nori in daily for grazing which breaks away and travels to the back as well.

So i have very healthy fish, colorful, only lost one, but that was due to receiving a mandarin goby way too early as my amphlopods were not mature yet.

So, i cut my feedings back to once a day. Some flake in the mornings, didnt want anyone to starve, and nitrates escalated above 100. The fish really dont mind but it has been tough on my corals. I even do water changes weekly. Never made a dent. Tried "Algon" nothing.

So im putting down the lap top and going into the office to Python the back of the tank. I hope it fits down in the back of there. I am hoping for three inches of waste!!! Just a theory.

Have any of you faced this issue? Do you vacuum the back of your overflow? What about putting some snails down in there, it would be tough for them to occlude the large vented return valve which goes to the refugium.

Thanks for any input.

Powerheads

Powerheads

I have two 1200s on the left pointing out into the main body of the tank. I the one that is behind the first alternates with the on that i have on the right side of the tank. All three have the rotating heads that one attaches (FLO rotating deflector) Just make shure that you take them out and super glue them if they keep popping off all the time. I did and that worked great.
The other two i have pointing down behind the rocks on on either side, which i have turn on only at night, as all five on with the lights heats my tank up. I am hoping the new MH on the way wont heat things up more.

I love my rose bubble tip anenome. My clowns live in it. I feed it twice a week with chunks of shrimp.

I think the best way to get rid of nitrates is water changes (which it sounds like you're doing). Other than that, some inverts will 'eat' nitrates, like clams (I think).

My homemade Durso pipe goes almost to the bottom of the corner overflow. I don't think much is settled there. There is a snail in my overflow (by accident). Could help?!

Could your test kit be bad?

I finally bought the SpectraPure LiterMeter III (and one remote pump) from MarineDepot. It cost a few hundred dollars, but not having to manually dose two parts of B-Ionic every morning is awesome. I did a lot of research (as much as I could find scouring the web). It wasn't an easy decision. I wanted something quiet, that would last many years, and ensure confidence in its consistent function. The setup was easy. I was disappointed it didn't ship with a way to mount it though. I find it to be very quiet. I can hear it, but it's faint. The price is steep, but overall, I'm very happy.

What happened to this thread? Nobody has 92 corners... and I just bought one, so let's get this going again!

Hey all,

My cousin is going to help me build a custom canopy for my 92 corner, has anyone attempted this yet? If anyone has and could email me their plans I would appreciate it. I am looking to build something similar to BRI Aquatics 92 corner canopy that has the hinge running along the top for easy access. Ideally I would be able to show him an example in person but since that is unlikely plans would be very helpful.

Thanks

Eventually I will learn how to post pics on here but I want to wait until everything looks right!

Here's mine. Not as nice as some of the others, but give me another year. ;)

I've made almost a full recovery from my tank crash. The hair algae is almost gone, a little more cyano to deal with, and my frags are growing nicely.

My tank is lit with T5s (2 x Aquablues and 2 x Blue+)

Just tagging along. Dreaming of upgrading from my regular ole 55 box to a 92 corner...I'm starting to have doubts tho...the lighting issues seem like a pain in the neck. But man are they beautiful. I've seen the cabinets and canopies that BRI makes, very nice very expensive... but I don't really care for the AGA furniture (that's what I have now, it's ok but plain).

Anybody ever had experience with the corner tanks from 4fishtank.com? Nice looking but I get a bad vibe from the website.

One other note...a guy in this area helped set up 4-92gal corners in a full circle pattern at a retirement home...sounds cool. I hope to see it some day.

finally got my 250 watt mh back from my lfs. Turned out the bulb was bad so hamilton will be sending me a new one to replace my 14k... for right now the store is loaning me out a 10k hamilton and it looks brighter and all but... too yellow for my tastes. I guess i'll take some pics with the 10k soon and in 2 weeks when the 14k bulb arrives i'll put them up as well so finally there will be pics showing the actual difference between 10k and 14k. i'm hoping for some insane coral growth while using the 1ok though :D
