hey guys along with building a new stand i thought soon i'll send in my ice cap ballast in for repair and the question is, from the time i stick it in the mail to the time i get it back, would my softies....lps and sps be ok with out light for that long out should i get a backup ballast for the time and if i should i honestly dont want to buy a new ballast so can anyone loan me one or does the club have one to lend out? thanks guys

I would say your tank would not be in good shape without lights for that long. It would be at least a week I would say.

The club does not have any extra ballast to loan out. That's one of those thing I am sure the new board will be all over.

I don't think that the Club should be in the business of having spare parts for people, But that's JMHO if there is enough people that want to spend money to have personal items on hand to borrow Majority rules!

If i had to lay out the cash for a backup everything.....ballast, pumps, powerheads, fixtures, there is no way i could afford a reef tank. It is nice to know if i have a pump or ballast crap out there might be someone that would lend me a spare while i wait on shipping. That said i do not stock extra supplies for those in need. I do however seem to always have something laying around not being used.
I guess it just comes down to how ones personal veiws on community vs self reliance.

I agree with you Bill but it never fails that people want to club to have all sorts of spare equipment and parts to loan out.

Glad to hear you are going to have it taken care of mario.

I agree. While it may be nice for the club to have spares, with all the different setups that just don't make sense. I have a spare reeflo dart as a backup to either of my pumps and anyone with a larger system is welcome to borrow it in a pinch.

The club would be best suited to have testing equipment and other things that the everyday hobbiest cannot afford but collectively as a group we can. I have a dual lighting system with a total of 5 ballasts so I can make due there in a pinch.

Mario, are you running t-5?

This is one reason why I buy at lfs. Most of time if warrant issue come up. And they have it in stock they will replace it right there. Or they sometime can have the vendor send a new one in as the sametime the old one is shipped.

But like Lindsey it's good to have backup. I keep extra skimmer pump and parts, return pump, vortech pumps and parts, and led fixture now. But before I always had extra ballast bulbs and wire.
