Lighting upgrade question?

Ok, so I have a 75 gallon tank with PC's on it. I want to try keeping SPS but don't want to buy Halides because I don't want to invest in a chiller. Does anyone know what would put out sufficient light to keep these corals, but not to much heat so a chiller wouldn't be required?

You dont NEED a chiller with MH. Just ventilate well with fans above the tank and at the sump, and you could easily keep the temps low enough.

Otherwise sell your car and buy the new solaris LED lights.

new lights that are very bright, very cool running, very energy effecient, and VERY EXPENSIVE!!!!! LIke $3000 or so.

Holy crap, I just found them!! I thought these were called American Lighting systems LED aquarium fixtures. That's what I remember researching earlier this year. I have never seen the website just heard about them from readings. I know a few people were testing for them and had excellent results, but I didn't know they were going to be available shortly. These will definetely be what I will go with for the next tank. Chillers are a pain and always break at the worst times. If I could eliminate that piece of equipment, it would be a huge benefit. Plus, good chillers (1/2hp) cost darn near $1000. Figure that halides for a 72" tank would cost about $1500 for the best setup. I figure that the $500 extra cost for the fixture would be well worth it!! Wow, the website is pretty darn neat!!

So, is anyone else investing into this particular technology of LED's? I understand LED's are expensive, but on a large scale the defcrease in electricity would be phenomenal!!

Sure, there cool.

How long is it going to take to actually start saving money on the low wattage lighting considering it cost so much to buy? How much is a replacement bank of LED's going to cost?

The lowest price 72" fixture is $3344, that is more than double what your high end $1500 MH fixture is. So i'm not sure where you got your figures from.

While I think there cool and the possibilty of them being a good thing is there, it's going to take ALOT more than the companies info to sell me on them. Especially at that price. These need to be tested by real reefers in the real world.

Maybe after a few years, i'd consider them, and that is ONLY if the price goes down, considerably! Until then, i'll stick with the trusty MH and some fans. ;)

I agree with ereefic. These are not the same LEDS that we use as moon lights. They are a new breed of high output LEDS. Although they claim the bulbs will nearly never need to be changed, Im sure it costs a kings ransom to do so. Also, how many times have you heard about the next coming of gear, and it turns out to be a flop in the real world. Let someone else test it, and then get on board.

I figured not having to purchase a $1000 chiller. Also, large halide setups can cost $$$$ to operate. LED's on the other hand are significantly less energy hogs. I really think this is the technology of the future.
