Lighting Website Updates

Thinking about upgrading to a shallow cube. Something around 36x36 but only 18" high.

Since the cube will be relatively shallow, spread it would seem would be more important to me than penetration. Understanding that, I would imagine something like a Luminarc would be necessary. Would a higher wattage bulb also increase the ability of a single pendant to light the tank? AKA would a 400w in a luminarc do a better job lighting the cube than a 250w? Or would the 250w be enough since the tank is so shallow.

I am also open to ballast and reflector suggestions!

Thank you

Adam

Tagging along to find out the answer to this. I am doing the same but on a 48X48X18. LIke you Adam, I am most worried about spread. I would like to hang a 400 watt Lumenbright 24" above the square tank in the center. If possible.

This may have already been discussed but I can't find it,what color temp and/or type of light will make the purples, reds, and oranges in my coral glow,and not take away from my blue's and green's?
I have read that the T5 lights bring the color out of the coral better than any other light,is this true?
I have 2x250w 14000k pheonix MH's and 4x65w ulv antinic PC's(Odyssea light fixture)on a 150g tank,my blue's and greens just glow under this but everything else seems washed out.
I am considering replacing the PC's with T5,and would like any feed back on this(pro's/con's)

Here is a very Good thread, large

The T5 Q&a Thread
all your questions and many more have been answered
There is a wealth of information there

son = hqi????

son = hqi????

Will all HQI lamps run on SON ballast just found this on osrams website and woundered if this goes for all HQI bulbs?

"HQI lamps from Osram are metal halide sources designed for operation on ballasts for high pressure sodium lamps."

The reason I ask is im wanting a metal halide unit for my aquarium which is set in the wall so looks are unimportant, instead of going with some fancy expensive pendant I was woundering if I could use one of the cheap SON flood light units available on the net and spend the extra money on better bulbs?

Steve

The proper ballast in Europe for HQI lamps is a European High Pressure Sodium ballast with a 4000-5000V (4-5kV) lamp ignitor and with an appropriate capacitor. With 400-watt lamps the capacitor value requirement is different for high pressure sodium and metal halide lamps due to the lamp’s operating current difference. The ballast specification will list the proper value for each or then the manufacturer should be consulted with. Here in North America we have separate ballasts for each lamp type because of the lower input voltage. The lower input voltage makes the ballast circuit different and more complex from the simple European reactor (single coil) ballasts.

I am using a 400*350 tanker

Hi guy's,
Anyone useing the new belize sun HQI / T5 fixtures? Thinking of getting one for my 46g bow 250w 14000k need to know the good , the bad, the ugly b4 i drop 5+bills

Thanks Jim

I'd like to put a retro 8x54w setup in my oceanic canopy but know absolutly nothing about lighting nor wiring. Will it fit and what setup do folks recommend including ballast, reflectors and bulbs. Tank is 24x24x48 and will have mostly lps with some sps.

We should try to keep this thread on the halide topic as much as possible

Grim,

I know you've done a lot of testing with the T5s on different ballasts with different reflectors. And Sanjay has built a great database with all his MH testing on various ballasts. I (and probably many others) would love to know if either of you have tested any MH lamps side by side with T5s using the same testing equipment?

I'd love to know how many T5s on the best reflectors it would take to generate the same PPFD as a single XM 400W 10K lamp run on a PFO HQI ballast (or any other MH bulb/ballast combo for that matter) using a high end MH reflector.

Sorry if this question has been asked of you a million times, but I have read much of your threads and haven't seen this answered.

Inquiring minds want to know :confused:

Thanks.

I did a long time ago. There are also several posts with comparisons. I have a couple.
