Lighting

i have a 250 10K, but i switched it out and am using my old 250 14K.. the LPS and SPS both seem to like this light a lot better..but my H. Mag doesnt..with the 10K the mag was very open, now with the 14K its almost like its cringing at the light.. it is fine but it likes the 10K a lot better(the mag still looks good).. what should i do?, honestly overall everything but the H. Mag looks better, i really think the 10K was just too intense for the rest of the tank.. should i just eggcrate the tank and use the 10K? the biggest and most important thing in my tank is my H. Mag by far.. because of how it is growing i have contenplated the idea of breaking down most or all of my reef for it.. any suggestions??

The corals will adjust to the new light but it won't happen in a day. Going from an old 14KK to a new 10KK is a significant increase in PAR, perhaps double or more. If you can't temporarily raise the bulb itself you could try a few layers nylon screen and take a layer off every few days.

I agree with Guy, The problem with the corals is the excessive ammount of light generated. Your anemone craves the light and the corals will adapt. They just need time.

Raise the lights or use some screen for a few days.

thats what i figured i would do(eggcrate or screen).. but for the first 3.5 weeks they didnt mind the light(LPS).. i tested all parameters and they check out great.. i was going to get a new 14k hamilton but i really cant have the H. Mag moving around.. for those who run this bulb how blue is it?? i will have no actinic supplement while the MH is on.. i know they need to adapt but they had great expansion in the beginning.. now almost a month later the light is too much??

I just switched from the 14,000K Hamilton bulbs. For me they were a pleasingly light shade of blue but they were too dark and did not flouresce my corals very well.

Can someone please help me with lighting I am not understanding. What to do or how they affect the growth of the tank.

I like a lot of stuff here is what I have colt, xenia, feather duster, ricardia and candy coral. I do have a pink piece of hard coral not sure what its called.and some mushrooms.

What kind of lighting are you runnig right now. IME Rics require a decent amount of light. With you 30" tank you are limited in the lighting that you can use. I would recommend about 3 65 watt power compacts. You could also go with T5 lighting. I would avoid Metal halide with you low amount of water. I would be concerned about the water temps in the summer. MH's generate a great deal of heat. I think that the t5's would be the best option. Heres a tank with t5 lighting only http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=700454&perpage=25&pagenumber=1

Just to give you an idea.

Keep burning the brighter lamps. Move LPS (such as Euphyllia) lower in the aquarium. SPS can and will adapt to the brighter lighting and mag anemones will definitely appreciate the brighter lighting.
If all else fails I will gladly adopt the mag. :D
