It really depends on what your wanting to keep in the tank. Softies, lps or sps....
This will make a big difference on what lighting you go with..

Also where are you in Louisiana?

live right outside baton rouge. new to this soo i don't have all the names, mostly soft i think torch, hammers, mushrooms, gonaporia, starpolyps, zoantheds, leather, anemone, thats all i can think of name wise. probably didn't spell to good, but i did my best

I wouldn't do the 400 watt, my softies and lps don't even like my 250's, I would do a light dose of t5's for your setup, then if you decide to get into more sps/clams then you can add more t5's

i want to do lighting capeable of keeping most anything. that is just some things i have. i just have powercompacts now. not much does to well at the bottom of my tank.

you're right...compared to the Tek lights. But once again it all comes back to what you want to keep. The novas do a hell of a job and I prefer them to any PC's I've had. I love my halides as my tag below mentions but in SoCal heat is ridiculous so with all the stuff running including fans and chiller electricity bill is sky rocketing and you NEED to take that in to consideration. The monthly 25-45 bucks adds up Fast. but again if this is going to be SPS only go with Halides.

Your tank is pretty tall, I'd stick with the 250's. The UV Lighting Super Actinic T5's will give you some nice color. Id maybe do half those and half Actinic Plus or Blue Plus.
