Lighting

what size are you looking at getting?

I'd suggest checking out www.reefgeek.com. They have an awesome selection for T5s. www.HelloLights.com is also very popular on ReefCentral.

If Power Compacts are what you really want, you might want to just post a thread asking the members if anyone has a setup for sale. PCs are kinda older technology so it is likely you will find some used lights available.

if your looking for some DIY stuff i have a couple setups. the first is 4X96w you would just need to get some bulbs for it and some bulb clips. it is 2 ballast with 4 quick disconnects and 4 water proof end caps. asking $100 obo. or i also have 2X400 MH with refelctors and a single dual ballast with a couple extra used bulbs. asking $200. LMK ifyou interested you can take a look or i can send you some pics.

Depends on what you are wanting to keep

If mainly softies and some sturdy LPS, PCs would be fine. I would go with atleast 4X65watt lamps. If you can do 96 that works.

BUT if you can get for a good price a MH setup.... GO WITH MH

Then you dont have to worry about what you can or cant keep.

Let me tell you 2 X400 watt MH for $200 is a steal, But you would need to mount the lights very High up. That would be ALOT of light for your tank.....

Hell you could even maybe get away with just one lamp.

Look in the used section.

I would personally get a Lumenarc reflector they are top notch. I also really like the PFO ballast also like 250W seems to be more choices in bulbs

True, but a lumenarc would probably be to wide especially if it's a 55g standard.

Thats what got me thinking that the T5s would be better for this application. Considering the fact that it is a 55g and if he stays in it, the odds are about a 100% he will upgrade within a year or so to a deeping/bigger tank and not worrying about heat issues or the need for chiller as with MH.

I guess the biggest questions my man.......are you going to use a hood on the tank or not. And as Edwin was asking, what KIND of stuff do you want to keep eventually.

Yes: slam as many retrofit T5s you can fit in there.

No: Hang a MH pendant......(DE's may be better in this application due to the small tank, and that the DEs are a bit narrower in the spead) Without the hood, you can have more lighting without room restriction and eliminate most, if not all heat issues that could be a problem due to enclosing MH lights. You could probably get away with one 250 and put lower light stuff on the edges.

I don't think the tek lighting or Coralife Aqualife kits will fit over a 55g because it would be too narrow.

Anyway, I love to design stuff and think this is the funnest part of owning a tank which is why I am so interested in these type of threads.......I guess thats why I became an Engineer. As well, I spent a lot of money buying more lighting when I didn't buy enough and would hate for anyone else to do the same.

Even if you have to wait a bit, buy the most and best type that is right for what you want to keep and that you can afford.
