can you run 2) 175 or 2) 250 watt mh lamps of of 1 400 watt mh single tap balast if you were to wire the sockets in series?

^like that?

Here are 3 things I personally see wrong with those scenarios....

1. FIRE

2. 2 x 250 = 500 watts = FIRE

3. 2 x 175, potential for startup current to obliterate the elements in the bulbs = FIRE

Lastly, of course I would be remiss if I didn't mention it, you could start a fire.

Cheers!

lol thats why you ask before you perform !!!!
you think 2) 400 watt mh lamps would be too much for a 90 gal id hate to boil the water and cook everything in the tank and is so how far off of the water should i set the lights?

i'd say two 175 might even be enough. i've got two 250's on my 125 and that's plenty, and i've got sps. what are you growing?

well its a newly set up 90 gal i plan on it being a mixed reef softys , lps and sps first i need to get a skimmer built diy my own plans on it replacs the bulbs on my dual satilite 4) 65 watt pc's and add some more live and some base rock currently i have a red mushroom colony 9-10 polops and some gsp's and xenia that im gonna give to a friend when his tank is established currently 25 lbs of live rock from the 10 gal i had set up i just moved everything to the 90 gal yesterday

i realy dont have a huge budget so the steps are going to be small used equipment will be helpfull , the 2) 400 watt balasts i am getting are free and i have no problen with trading them thats if anyone would want them they are commercial grade multi volt will work with 115/208-230/ or 460 volt they came from a factory and are i great working order, they are magnetic balastsfull hanging assembly's with sockets and reflectors, i figured they would be too much but i cant pass up freebies
