Lighting

New to the hobby and looking for lighting for a 40 gallon hex tank. Want to house just a few fish and some of the easier to handle corals for now any suggestions on the lighting would be great and also the must haves for keeping a nice tank. Thanks

Here is a few a refugium with rock and macro algae, plenty of live rock, a good skimmer, powerheads (most of us have koralias 3 or 4) for good water movement. We run carbon in a canister filter but some people put carbon in their fuge. Here is a good website on the basis http://www.melevsreef.com/tanks.html

Hope this helps

I think a pendant type metal halide light is good for a hex tank. A hex tank is not an easy one to light with fluorescent bulbs due to its shape. I would consider a 14K to 20K metal halide bulb for a hex tank.

If you are set for keeping just fish and soft corals only, you can use a low wattage one. However, a lot of people tend to migrate toward more light demanding corals as they get more familiar with the hobby. A lot of softies such as zoanthids and leathers actually love high light, and IMHO they look prettier under a metal halide light. If your budget allows, a 150W clip on type or pendant metal halide lamp would be really nice.

As for the must have's, a good skimmer is indispensable. A refugium is not easy to install on a hex tank unless you can make a hex shaped sump like 8Ball did for his. A remote system may work if you have a convenient place/method to hide it.

I use a cora life 150w clip on Mh on my 35. Works pretty good. If you only plan on keeping lower light corals you should be fine.. As far as a refuge goes, Tomoko is right on the space issue. There just isn't much room under hex tanks. I built my own stand and made it just a little bigger then a standard AGA stand. But even with mine there just isn't a lot of room under there. I'd be a little more worried about space for a skimmer since your main focus seems to be fish. Here is an older picture of my tank.. Only one I could find already uploaded. Should give you and idea of what the clip on pendant looks like over the tank. Mine is mounted to the wall though and not the tank.
