lights causing too much heat.

I just set up my aquamedic 4x250 mh. I have to braces on top of tank and the new light has heated them almost to point of deforming it. The lights are hung from ceiling at 6". After finding this issue I raised to 9" and its still too hot. What are some possible solutions before something bad happens.

put small fan @ top brace area.

short of spraying water on the brace.
how hot is it at 9"high?

started to deform brace. I used a fan today and temp was good, brace didnt get hot.
