lights off during acclimation question

was reading the acclimation post by leebca on reefland and was wondering if he meant to leave the lights off for 1 day or 2.

I do the same. Usually leave lights off the first day.

I don't expose fish I got via mail-order immediately to intense light, just normal ambient room light. But I don't bother with slow light acclimatization and the fish don't seem to mind it much.
Fish I buy locally never go fully dark anyway.
