Lineatus wrasse swimming disorder ?

I thought I post this in both the fish and fish didease section, need some help

I have had my lineatus wrasse in quarantine for about 2 weeks, everything started off great and he was eating everything I gave him. About 2 days ago , he seemed to loose it balance / equilibrium and will swim gently upward and then drift back down. He appears to be breathing okay. He has also stopped eating. He is in a 40 gallon tank , salinty is 1.024 and water tested for zero amount for ammonia. I did some research and one internet comment talked about this happening to fish that are collected in deep water.I assume something is wrong with his bladder, but not sure what else I should do to treat him .

Had this happen with a rhomboid wrasse a year or so back. This fish lived over a month not able to keep its balance. I finally euthanized this fish as it could no longer get food. Hate to be negative but the prognosis is not good.

More background his eyes look clear and there is no visible marks of any kind. Has anyone else had similiar experience? Anyone with a happy ending? It always seems that if you are going to have an issue it occurs with your most expensive fish. I was hoping it is something I could treat as watching him swim now is very sad experience.

I've never had a fish recover from symptoms like that, either in salt or freshwater systems. There's a good chance some sort of internal damage was done to it when it was collected. Assuming all your parameters are good, you've got no way to know what's causing the problem, and thus no way to treat it. Though to be honest, i don't think there really are any good treatments for swim bladder issues.

heart breaking to watch for sure.

From what I have been told is the fish was probably "pinned" when collected and its swimbladder was damaged.

With such little tank info its hard to say.

But whats used for water flow in there?
Do you have a lid on this tank?

Its probably a swimming bladder problem. I had a Lineatus do that same thing to me, except I had him for almost a month before he started swimming eradically. The best advice I can tell you is look at reef builders dot com for the video they have about swimming bladder issues. Might be worth a shot.

Thanks for everyone,s input. I have a small tunzie pump for flow, there is a gentle flow and I do have a lide on my quarantine tank. I will check the reef builder website as well.

Salt water recieves oxygen from a gas exchange at the surface. Good steady water flow and a supply of fresh air is needed for this gas exchange.

The reef builder website under swim bladder had an excellent video and comment section on this topic. In the comment section , they recommend a broad anti bacterial medication like Erythromycin. I think I am going to try this approach, I wil keep you aware of my progress.
