Lining bucket with cellophane wrap.

I was wondering if I could line the inside of some old 5 gallon buckets that aren't food grade with a few layers of cellophane wrap to prevent things like phosphate from leaking into the water and then using that cellophane wrapped bucket for water transport or even storage. Thanks.

Are the buckets really leaching anything? It's a common myth, but I've yet to see anyone give a chemical explanation for where this phosphate that supposedly leaches out of buckets comes from.

Not sure if the buckets would be leaching, but if they were I wouldn't trust cellophane wrap to stop it. the water will inevitably leak past the srap and get to the bucket anyways. Can't see it working well. If you were to try that, I'd at least use a trash bag instead that will fit over the bucket. Buckets are also pretty cheap, like $3. It's probably not worth the trouble to try to salvage a bucket. I just buy new buckets for my water, or reuse salt buckets.

So in realty are you saying any bucket regardless of plastic type can be used to store RO/mix SW and the whole chemical leakage thing is a myth.

I was just thinking to play it safe without going out my way to buy more "food grade" containers, I could line a bucket with like cellophane or like a hefty garbage bag.

I would be far more worried about the plastic in the garbage bag than the plastic in the bucket.

What kind of bucket are you talking about? Most of the time the difference between food grade and non-food grade is whether or not the manufacturer went through the trouble of having it certified.

Yes indeed. Presuming that we're talking buckets made of HDPE/LLDPE, there's little that can leach in any significant quantities that would cause problems.

Im talking about #2 HDPE. Like the home depot buckets.

Those are fine. There are enough of us using Homer buckets that if they were going to kill a tank then several of us would have been done for a long long time ago. If you did find a "food grade" bucket it would most likely be made from exactly the same plastic.

my white food grade and my orange homer buckets both have the #2 hdpe logo.

If you really want to be safe, try hitting up your local brew your own wine places. I get 6G food-grade buckets with lids for anywhere from $1 to $3, depending on the store and the mood that they're in.
