Lionfish in 29 gallon?

Hey there,

Is there a possibility if keeping a Lionfish (dwarf?) in a 29 gallon aquarium? It's got a 16 gallon sump, so about 35 gallon water volume total.

If so.... what could go with it ? rock? any corals whatsoever? any inverts? any other fish?

Thanks in advance.

Dwarf Zebras and Fuzzies both work in tanks that size but I think they would eat any other fish or inverts small enough not to overstock the tank IMO. Live rock would be good though

I would put a lion and a grouper or Trigger with him. Run god filtration and you will not have to worry.

I know that this might sound like I'm way overstocking, but i had a 55 and i had

4 inch Niger Trigger
7 Inch Minatus Grouper
5 inch Panther Grouper
4 inch Humu trigger
5 inch Sailfin Tang
4 inch Yellow Tang
hawkfish
harlequin bass

I ran

1500 cascade filter
Emeror 400 filter
Seaclone 150 Protein Skimmer
Turbo Twist Uv steriizer
Hydro Koralina #3

Water Changes twice a month and never had any roblems with any levels in my tank

Well.. I've decided to go with a Zebra Dwarf Lion fish..
they're gorgeous!!! (and possible to keep for me :-D)

Do they need special lighting? will my 130 pc be sufficient? (1x actinyc, 1x 10k)

I'm running a sump and protein skimmer on that tank, that should be sufficient right?

I use RO water normally, and do weekly (atleast 3 times a month) water changes.

If i'd just add a couple of Live Rocks, maybe 10-20 pounds.. create some caves and add some tonga branches.. grow some softies, like mushrooms, ricordeas and kenya trees.. Would that be a suitable environment?

How about snails ? can there be snails?

What kind of substrate would be recommended, can i keep my live-sand ? (i have crushed coral laying around if i need that).

There we go..craploads of questions ;) I'll do some searching while i'm at work.. (gotta do something!)

Live rock and live sand are always good, I once kept a zebra with some snails and he didn't pay them any attention. Careful, these fish can be a little reclusive and tough to feed, but in a tank that small it should be easier. If you're not going to use live food (small shrimps are good for a zebra) you can use an acrylic rod to dangle the food as if it were alive to entice him. Remember to feed a varied diet and take it easy on the goldies

I read some articles about feeding, basically, either saltwater bait fish, or shrimp... I'd probably get some ghost shrimp or frozen krill (eventually).

We'll see..
I'm not there yet, going to have to upgrade my currrent 29 stuff into the 75 first..

yea i'v got a fuzzy in my 29 and i love em' he's got quite the personality and for rocks, my tank is loaded with caves and hide outs they use them during the day when your not home. but once you walk in the room they come out to say hello haha well mine dose atleaste

I read that many of them get attached to people like that (or want food from people... like that)... It's going to take me a while to get this set up.. but it should definitely be worth it :)

What else do you have in your tank?

i have a chocolate chip starfish and i had gotten a damsel when i first started and that was a mistake, can never catch them, but as of now the only real fish in there is the lion. but i must inform you that these lions will kill if provoked, i had a beastly saltwater minnow from the bay and he was the boss of everything he was in the tank for about a year and he would kick some damsel a$$ when it came down to territory, i added the lion and about a month later the minnow got in his way and polk! right in the head the minnow insantaniously started twitching and was dead the next morning. so honestly im not going to add anymore live stock from what i have witnessed can happen. i know that you can usually get away with nice comunity fish, but if something messes with that lion, he's as good as mounted on the wall.

Advising someone to put an grouper in a 29 gallon isnt the smartest piece of advise ive heard in my life.. Lions and triggers are usually not compatible with each other i would suggest researching before posting people take advise seriously on this forum and the advise you just gave could very well cost a person hundreds of dollars .... Psycho if your going to be putting corals in with you tank i would go for a bit stronger lighting, dwarf lions are nocturnal so lighting isnt really a big issue with them. For feeding i would suggest using live foods only for weening them onto prepared and try to use more than krill, krill can cause a lot of problems if its fed on a regular basis, a good one to use is get some shrimp, squid clams from the grocery store and preparing some food your self make sure there are no added chemicals, frozen silver sides are also good just chop em up :D good luck and have fun dwarf lions are great my first fish was a dwarf and ive been keeping em ever since:D

i agree that advise was a little out there.

If the lionfish is is fine with my lighting, my corals sure are.. The tank has been set up for a while with the corals now, we're upgrading whatever is in the tank to a 75 gallon at the moment, but i'm thinking of keeping the mushrooms in the 29... they don't need that much lighting :)

Thanks for the advice all... Where do you get live shrimp?

live saltwater shrimp are very hard to find and expensive people usually use freshwater ghost shrimp to wean then on to frozen foods. ghost shrimp can usually be found at your LFS. but if you cant find them you can use guppies, but i dont recomend that as a solid diet, freshwater food are not that great for saltwater fish. that can cause liver problems. mine loves krill, prawn, choped silverside, and on occasion some live brine.

yea.. i read about the liver disease problems (because of the high-fat in freshwater fish).. there's this sticky article on this forum, it's AWESOME...

I'll figure that part out ..

Will they attack conches?

I heard they produce a lot of waste, so conches would probably be a good addition to the tank..... but will they be eaten? or not?

conches should be good i have yet to see a a snail r something with a hard sheel like that get eaten by a dwarf

in regards to keeping lions and triggers together, my brother has a volitan lion living with an about 10 inch niger trigger in his room now. tho i dont know if triggers can be put in tanks that small and the dwarf isnt exactly as large as a volitan. triggers would also eat your corals and inverts sooo id steer clear of them for this tank.
