Lionfish question

I was wondering if anybody who owns a lionfish ever notice it shed a clear film. My lionfish will do this at least once a month or maybe twice. It will lurch quickly forward and a layer of film will come off. Is this normal? whatever it is my regal tang likes to eat it too? gross...hehe

If it doesn't make him sick, be glad the tang eats the slime You might want to start supplementing his food with boogers...egad!

I dont think lion fish are really that aggressive. They just eat whatever they can fit in their mouth.

agreed cweber, the venous thing and all is a defense for the fish, and it's not "aggressive" they just eat fish. I've seen 1" damsels that are more aggressive than a lionfish, lol.

Not sure how good that would be for the regal to feed on either, or if it's just gross like it sounds

I have read in TFH magazine that this is one of the reason why lion fish are able to keep parasites off of them and it is natural for them to sluff off a layer of stuff on occassion.

ive always wanted a lionfish but never got one do to thinking it would eat everything in my tank...i guess thats the whole me being the newbie thing...

I am glad that this is normal, I didn't want to loose my lionfish. He has a lot of character/personality.

jnsnams, i would not recommend him if you have small fish because they will be his lunch trust me i know i have lost my skunk clowns and my chromises. I thought they would be fast enough but the lionfish is very patient and stealthy. I know one thing also, when you clean the tank or move things around you become very self conscious about the surrounding. Dont want to be stung by one, i have heard it hurts.

Is it also normal to have the lionfish growth to slow down. He grew really fast until he got to be around 6-7 inches long....now it doesnt seem to grow? Kinda curious when he will get to be a foot big.
