In a few places I have heard that you can clip a lionfish's spines. is this true? its ounds a little cruel if you ask me. Could you maybe cap them?

Cut can cut any part of an animal off.
Is it good for them? Not at all.
There is a myth floating around that they can be trimmed like stingray barbs. The truth is that lion fin spines are not set up the same way a ray's barb is.

Why in the world would anyone want to do this? What's next, pulling teeth of clown triggers?

Word...besides, there are other spines to consider besides the lionfish's dorsal spines.

If you're afraid of the fish, don't keep it. That being said, I've never been popped in over 20 years of keeping venomous fishes, and I don't take any special precautions other than knowing where my fishes are at all times.

FWIW, most envenomations occur due to the aquarist putting their hands on the fish, not the reverse.
