I'm jealous. Looks like you got some nice specimens.

I've always wondered.. if their spines are poisonous:
1) How do you get them in a bag without hurting their spines?
2) How do you get them out of the bag without hurting their spines?

nice lions and very nice rock work.
its only the dorsal spines which are venomious.
the dorsal spines are quite stiff but move around at the base, as long as your carefull when netting/cupiing them up they dont get caught or broken

It's quite easy, the bags are pretty thick and they slide out pretty easy.

The tank is larger than what it looks, total volume is 700L (185gal)

thanks heaps

hi-
what a beautiful Juvie P Volitans
you might start by reading the lionfish info sheet

and the whole issue on scorpionfish

Next puffers are notorious fin nippers, and its not uncommon for puffers to denude a lion. So no I would NOT recommend a puffer w/ a lionfish. You can consider larger wrasses, smaller groupers, some angel fish, planktonic feeding triggers (blue cheeck, pinktail, cross hatch, etc)

my female blue cheek trigger has developed the attractive and interactive personality of a puffer, and never nips anything but her food. :)

Beautiful lions. Makes me wish I had my house already (dorms suck).

I love your aquascaping as well. You can really tell you used to have eels!

Why did you get rid of your eels? Unless it was a tesselata or something huge you should be ok with lions and eels.

Lions have more venomous spines than their dorsals. Not sure exactly how many but some of the first spines on almost each fin is venomous, you can see which ones on a big lion.

Also I have to disagree with the vast majority regarding "dogface" or arothron puffers nipping the fins of lions. I have said it many times and I'll say it again, I have a large lion that has been housed with numerous, supposed "fin nippers".....and never have any of them harmed my lion. ACTUALLY I have seen large angels pick at the spines of other lions, not puffers.

Oh.....have never seen a problem with lions' spines and bags or transport. They always seem to just fold up against their body.
